France Michel Hazanavicius remaking zombie comedy ‘One Cut Of The Dead’ With Bérénice Bejo

Source: Screen Daily

Michel Hazanavicius remaking zombie comedy ‘One Cut Of The Dead’ With Bérénice Bejo Grégory Gadebois, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Lutz.

Quote:
Set against the backdrop of a B-movie shoot that is descending into disaster, Duris plays the director who seems to be the only one invested with the necessary energy to keep the low-budget zombie film afloat.

As he tries to gee up jaded technicians and uninterested actors, shooting is disturbed by the arrival of authentic undead.

The original film by Shinichiro Ueda was made on a tiny budget of just $25,000 and went on to gross more than $30m worldwide. It was inspired by Ryoichi Wada’s play Ghost In The Box and produced by Enbu Seminar.

Reviews coming in are mixed.

I haven't seen the original, but in the unlikely event this hits the big screen locally I might go for it. If I see the remake at least I won't have the knowledge of seeing a superior original in the back of my mind.

This may be the most entertaining zombie comedy ever made, and it's a technical tour-de-force for French director Michel Hazanavicius and his talented cast, with Bérénice Bejo and Romain Duris in top form.

Honestly, the less you know about it going in, the more you're likely to enjoy it.

The original was fun. If you haven't seen it, you might get even more out of this. With nothing negative meant by it, I'll call the original a gimmick film. I think that works in a remake of a different language. I notice they kept a Japanese actress from the original.

Well in the remake, the director takes a job remaking a Japanese film, so it's very tongue-in-cheek.

Here's a review that imho sums it up nicely:

Final Cut is the perfect film for the acclaimed filmmaker, it's one of the funniest and sweetest films of the past year, and it's one of the best movies about movies in recent memory.
