Default Walmart : Magnavox Player: $98

Many may not be able to afford an expensive unit or may be just looking for a second or third player in the house.

Walmart (at least the one by my house) has the Magnavox unit selling for $98 for the last week. Of course I purchased one. The picture is excellent on my 32" LCD in the bedroom. Could believe the wonderful pricing.

This is an opportunity for some lucky people to get into the blus or stock up on the rest of the rooms in the house.

These $98 blu-ray players are a bargain and are the newer model NG500MGX or NG530MGX. The NG500MGX is speculated to be a Walmart exclusive that is the same as an NG530MGX so that competitors can't price match.

Only profile 1.1 and reported to load quickly.
Only a couple of titles have been reported not to work but the majority of titles have no problems playing.

They should still have these available and it's speculated that they are clearing these out for the profile 2.0 players coming out that will become the standard blu-ray player model.

*If they don't have them with the DVD players, look around their isle ends.

Oh and they have HDMI cables for about $25(I know, still not cheap), which is cheaper than best buy and other stores.
If you can't get one from Monoprice, you can pick up a 10ft HDMI at Frys for $7.99 if you have one locally.

I bought one last week. This player is very fast. Menus are responsive. It has played everything I tried, including The Dark Knight, which gave my old player all kinds of problems. Overall, very very nice for ony $98.

So we update F/W via SD card? That's nice if that were the case.

Thanks my friend. That sounds like a winner for my wife's studio as we're not looking for anything fancy as it will be connected to a 23in LCD via HDMI to DVI-that's how old that LCD TV is.

There have been reports that not all walmarts have it for $98. Some at $128 and some at $168. Did you try scanning it at one of those price-checkers in the store? I bet it will ring up $98. Worth a try.

Also, there is a big ongoing thread about this player in the hot deals subforum :

I just bought one today from Walmart (I am in DFW area and many stores have had this deal for at least 2 weeks now).

It won't play Disney's 'Bedtime stories', I can never get to the menu, it will reboot itself while accessing menu. It does play 'The day the earth stood still'. The load time is acceptable when it works.

I have to say that I am disappointed about blue-ray in general: I really don't see any significant improvement over the DVD in video or audio quality. To be fair, I already have a decent system to begin with: my A/V receiver does upconversion to 1080p on HDMI, and I am listening in 7.1. But I am surprised to see little improvement, if any.

Unless I can find a firmware update for this player to play newer discs, this player is going back and I am sticking with what I have for a while, waiting for SONY/SAMSUNG to drop to this price range.
