Do you have your movie collection insured?

For the people that have huge collections....do you have to take pictures of every one for insurance? I would be devastated to lose my collection.....I mean everything else you can pretty much replace one time like the tv,furniture,etc....but movie collections take a long time and alot of searching for good deals and special editions.I need to get renters insurance and am just wondering how I should do the movies. I have over 1000 movies but I just never have time to go on here and update my collection.....

I would ask your insurance company what you need to do. Photos, videos, reciepts, etc. See if you need any "special" coverage for items like movies.

Your movie collection is covered under the 'Contents' (Coverage C) portion of your homeowners policy. I would keep a file with the receipts of your Blu-ray purchases. In the event something happens, you will be able to give this information to your adjuster. I'd also snap a couple of pictures of your collection and keep them on file.
Now if you collect movie props or memorabilia, you should have them appraised and contact your agent about having them added to your policy.

Here's a little tip regarding receipts. Everytime I buy a new movie, I put the receipt inside the case once I open the movie, which is usually right away. I have receipts that are around 5 years old.

Our insurance covers everything in the house, as long as there are signs of breaking and entering.. I dont know if its the same in the states, but here you have to write a list of the movies you lost to the insurance company.. I have taken quite a few pics which I have uploaded so they don't disappear with my computer if it gets stolen.. This is one of my absolute biggest fears!

Got photos, lists which I keep in hard format on and off site. This way if the house burns down I still have the list. Paid extra as company only said it covered up to 5 thousand for things like DVD'S AND Blu discs. Losing my collection only comes second to photos.

Geez I hadn't even thought about this. Once I get my room in order (where I currently have all my DVD's) and get the bookshelves organized, I should probably take pictures. I don't excpect anything bad to happen, but to lose close to 2,000 DVD's/Blu-ray's that I've been collecting since Christmas of 1998, and not be compensated would be devastating.

I was told by my insurance agent some time last year, that my vinyl collection would require a seperate policy as it is NOT covered under the traditional CONTENT portion of the home insurance policy. I don't quite understand why this is so, but I took picures of my collection (spines) and will now do the same with my smaller (a little less than 100) Blu-ray collection. I need to retake pictures of my vinyl collection as I've bought about 75-100 new vinyl's in the last year.

I actually need to sit down with him and discuss this in further detail as I have no way of evaluating the true worth of my collection, since many, if not most, are out-of-print.

Thanks to the OP for starting this thread. It has reminded me that I must be a little more pro-active in securing my investment.

I don't have an insurrance just for my movie collection, but now that you mention it, it wouldn't be a bad idea if I documented my collection more thoroughly.

I do have an all-encompassing insurrance that will reimburse me for my house + content inside in case of a fire or flood or other natural disaster. I guess showing the scanned bills I've kept for my blu-ray purchases would suffice to prove the amount of value I've lost ...

Check with your insurance agent to see how you're covered. Every homeowner policy is different, and rules can vary state-by-state.

I have my collection insured. I had to go talk to my insurance company and let them know. I have over $13,000 in just blu-rays alone, so i decided to take some action a few months ago. I have a documented folder, both online and offline, that has every single blu-ray written down with a picture next to it. I have the receipts and the date purchased along with the store it was purchased from. I would freak if anything happened to my collection.

In answer to the OP's question, like others, mine is insured under my homeowner's policy. I certainly do not, and would not, have a rider for it.

That will help a lot during a fire when no people are in the house.

When I initially bought my house and insurance I checked with my agent and was told movies would be part of the coverage portion of my insurance. I've got my collection cataloged on this site as a list of the movies I own.
