Good news. I wonder if it's coming from Sony directly or from Criterion.

Has Kermode written for Criterion before? With his name attached I was thinking BFI.

Could this title fall under the Columbia Collection set? 🤔

It could! And then get a Criterion single later like Last Picture Show.

Definitely agree on all but Licorice Pizza. Magnolia, Boogie Nights and Hard Eight would make me especially happy.

The dialogue is brilliant, especially this -

Barry on the phone amid a crowd of people passing;

ELIZABETH
Hello?

BARRY
Hey it's me I'm just at work and I'm
wondering, you know your friend Lena?

ELIZABETH
Yeah, what about her?

BARRY
Do you know where she's staying in
Hawaii? She forgot her pocketbook at my
work and I wanted to get it back to
her, make sure she wasn't nervous.

ELIZABETH
Oh My God, yeah, I know exactly
where she's staying and you're f****** lying.
She didn't forget her purse or pocketbook.
What do you want her number for?

BARRY
Please don't do this to me.

ELIZABETH
What do you want her number for?

BARRY
All I want is her number, can you help me out?

ELIZABETH
Tell me why you want her number?

BARRY
There is no reason for you to treat me this way.

ELIZABETH
Do you like her?

BARRY
You're killing me, you're killing me with the way you are towards me.
ALL I WANT IS THE F******NUMBER, THAT SHOULD BE GOD DAMN GOOD
ENOUGH FOR YOU NOW GIVE ME THE F****** NUMBER! YOU F******HEAR
ME? I'M SICK OF THIS F****** S**** STOP F****** TREATING ME THIS WAY
AND GIVE ME THE F******NUMBER, I'LL F******KILL YOU! YOU WANT THAT?

One of those rare films that show Sandler doing something beyond his usual moronic shtick...

It doesn't hurt that he's done a few dramatic projects. I really enjoy this and Uncut Gems. He comes across as such a likeable guy in interviews and appears to be close knit with family. I'd imagine he enjoys the comfort of doing comedies with his usual friends and directors over more complex projects with less familiar variables and people to work with. These types of roles I'd imagine take some research and preparation compared to the usual types of characters he could probably wing with great results. Never got the impression he was an award chaser even if I think he was deserving of awards for say Uncut Gems. Even after growing up seeing his movies, SNL characters and comedy cds for nearly a couple decades, at times I'd forget Sandler was in Uncut Gems as he lived and breathed that character. This movie is also very good and it really surprised me at the time like many others because his dramatic chops were untested.

No argument here. Boogie Nights and Magnolia are two of my all-time favorites.

It is part of the Columbia Collection IV. I'm still hoping there is an individual release coming.

Came here exactly for this... have any of the films included in the previously released set received individual releases?

I’m almost betting that Criterion will get to Upgrade it to 4K UHD much like they did for Last Picture Show after Sony released it in their limited box set.

What would be the motivation for Criterion to release it?

The Last Picture Show was previously available only in the BBS boxset, and they added the sequel as a special feature. What could they do for Punch-Drunk Love?

They have not released Dr. Strangelove, Anatomy of a Murder or It Happened One Night.

I just noticed one of the Criterion bonus features that was on their BLU release is also on the Sony 4K. So if anything Sony might drop a single release in 2-3 years.

Sony gave Dr. Strangelove a proper individual release. Lawrence of Arabia got an individual SteelBook that was available for about two weeks.
