The instructions are in posts #12211 and #12214. I'd just quote them, but there are attachments that show diagrams of where to find the little white slider. You'll probably need a flashlight to see it.

Player 820 randomly decided yesterday not to read any disc I popped in. Displayed disc cannot be read message. Turning it off and on didn’t work. Not till I completely unplugged it for a few minutes then plug it back in did it work.

Any ideas why that would happen?

If the TV has Dolby Vision (which I believe the LG C1 does), then I would say get the Panasonic. The PS5 does not have Dolby Vision, which the UB820 does and it automatically switches to Dolby Vision if it is present.

I’m looking to purchase a Panasonic UB9000 for a new theatre room using a Sony 6000ES projector. I am trying to decide between the “normal” version and “region free zone”. Does anyone know if there is any difference in image quality between the two? I.e. Do they modify or replace any hardware components?

I purchased my last one from Amazon in Canada and although the unit itself looked OK, the retail box and inside packaging looked like it came from a garage sale.

That’s a fantastic price. Dolby Vision and the HDR optimizer will both provide significant upgrades over your PS5. Get a good warranty if you can though, my 820 has gotten so unreliable with 4K discs that I’m finally having to replace it.

There wouldn't be any difference in image quality apart from the ability to play other regions' discs.

Bear in mind anything that's modified internally will have its box opened and the cover taken off the player as well as parts soldered on. So it depends on their standards.

As someone else noted, no difference in visual quality but it does require someone to physically open and mod the internals. So depending on who does it, your mileage may vary.

I used 220-electronics and it came in its original box with all original packaging. The only thing that was done was the player removed, the mod done and everything packaged back up.

Gaming systems are not dedicated disc players so it's absolutely worth it to get the Panasonic. You will also extend the life of your PS5's optical drive if you have another disc player to play movies on.

Still sealed? Just be aware that Panasonics have had some reliability issues recently. It’s possible someone is trying to get rid of a faulty player at that price.

Sound advice but I have to say that my slim PS3 is a freaking tank. I was initially only using it for Region B titles (it’s modded region free) but with all the issues I’ve had with my 4K players, I started playing all my blu-rays & DVDs on it. It’s a bit loud but otherwise still 100% reliable. Previously had a fat model and that one never failed either.

I replaced the problematic Sony X800M2 with the Panasonic UB820 almost 2 years ago, and for a year, the player was flawless, but starting this year the UB820 started to get picky with discs too. First it was both of the Blade Runner movies, then came the Superman 5-Movie Collection, and recently the Nightmare before Christmas...

Many other users have indicated similar pixelating/skipping issues too after 8-12 months of use, so is this how blu-ray players age now? Including my previous Xbox One S, this is the third 4K UHD player I had that have disc skipping problems, and I can't be replacing players every other year.

To be fair, the UB820 is still the best of the three, and discs that tend to have issues are almost all from WB (Blade Runners, Superman Collection, and god, I have yet to actually play the Game of Thrones collection...), except for this recent release of the Nightmare before Christmas. I rewatched Westword earlier this year, and the whole series played fine unlike what people say about Game of Thrones.

So, is this more of a disc issue or player issue? As some of the Panasonic owners on here said they were fine with the Nightmare before Christmas, while I had issues with 2 orders of it...

My 820 earlier this year was starting to pixelate or cut sound then stopped reading any 4k disc, now will not read any blu ray discs. I took it apart and cleaned lens etc and reads some blu rays but no 4k disc’s still so I guess it is done. Not sure what to replace it with but I do have a 9000 to use on main tv till I find something for downstairs tv.

That’s really disconcerting. Perhaps Pana use lower quality parts now? My 820 and two 9000 for 5 years still haven’t had any problem.

That was the exact same issue I had a few years back on my 820. It would not read any discs and the only way to get it to work is by unplugging it. After figuring that out, I decided to I replace my surge protector (which was a Monster Cable One) and once it was replaced, the issue went away.

So my recommendation: Buy a new surge protector!

Blade Runner was one of the straws that broke the camel’s back for me. It played fine on my old Sony 4K player a few years ago but broke up into pixelation when I put it in the 820 a couple weeks ago. No noticeable scratches on the disc. Then the player choked on my brand new copy of Jaws 2, also scratch free. I was willing to put up with the player when it was just scratched discs from the Mexican plant causing it problems but this was too much. Got a new one at a discount yesterday and it played both Blade Runner and Jaws 2 perfectly. I’ll be curious to see how it handles the next scratched Shout or Criterion I pick up…

Multiple employees at Best Buy were familiar with Panasonic’s recent reliability issues when I went in to buy my new one. The one guy said it was a chip issue and that the latest model has fixed whatever had been plaguing some of the old units. I’ve read speculation that Panasonic was using inferior parts during the COVID shortages and that would fit the timeline for when I bought my last unit.

Hmm, I’ve recently been having some issues with my outlets (bad wiring in an old house) and my unit did feel quite hot when I was handling it the other day. Gonna have to fix the outlets in my media room ASAP.

That could also explain why firmware version 1.70 is not available for download.

That may also explain when I inquired to Vision Electronics in Canada and specifically asked if they the latest production batches in which they do. They appeared to be aware that the units during COVID had some issues but since they get units in small volume or demand they do not carry any old stock.

Maybe some here can help me

Bought the panasonic ub9000 like a year ago.
But i notice by some movies or most that the screen sometimes gets a flickering stroke at the downside of the screen.
It happens fast like a second but still noticeable yesterday with the tecas chainsaw massacre super mario bros dog soldiers etc.

Anybody does have the same problem?
Or knows how to fix this.
