Default Monarch : Legacy of Monsters [3D Series]

Upcoming Apple TV+ show "Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" is reportedly being shot in 3D format

https://www.macrumors.com/2023/06/12...eo-vision-pro/

Primary for the upcoming VR headset from Apple.

Sounds extremely interesting... Monster Series in 3D

I'm taking this with a giant grain of salt, but it wouldn't be entirely implausible.

Very intrigued. This is the sort of content that could actually sell the device. Being just a head-mounted PC/productivity app/phone/TV won't do it.

The first Trailer looks amazing

"The series is shot with 3D cameras in Apple’s Spatial Video Format for the Apple Vision Pro."

They’ve been calling Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio, so guess it makes sense to also use the term Spatial Video. Wish the industry would get off this kick on head-mounted displays though.

I'm still not really sure what format "spatial video" is. Like shot with a beam-splitter 3D rig for stereo 3D or a 180/360 degree 3D rig for VR only?

Generally I'd assume they just mean L/R 3D, at least for big budget long form TV shows like this since they also need to put those through the regular Apple TV+ cycle.

They'll also be offering "spacial video" capture on the iPhone 15 via software upgrade later, which will apparently capture video simultaneously from two lenses.
They can call it what they want, but that sounds like 3D to me.

I saw a commercial for that. Looked like it had a small fixed interaxial. Probably will take really shallow 3D.

I believe this will be the first English-language 3D television series, and the second overall, following the Japanese-language Tokyo Control from 2011 (which is on 3D Blu-ray).

Why?

Virtual displays are the future. Augmented reality will eventually fit into compact eyeglasses (and even contact lenses) and enable us to have immersive viewing, gaming, meeting, and computing experiences anywhere. Physical displays will become obsolete. Also, 3D looks best on HMDs because each eye has its own display with no ghosting, and giant OLED virtual cinema screens and halfdome and fulldome videos are much more immersive than any physical setup.

This page on the Apple Vision Pro goes a bit into what "Spatial Video" is:

https://www.apple.com/apple-vision-pro/
Quote:
Apple Vision Pro is Apple’s first 3D camera. You can capture magical spatial photos and spatial videos in 3D, then relive those cherished moments like never before with immersive Spatial Audio. Your existing library of photos and videos looks incredible at remarkable scale. And panoramas wrap around you — making you feel like you’re standing right where you took them. You can also take spatial videos with iPhone 15 Pro, then view them on Apple Vision Pro.*

...

You can also take spatial videos on the go using iPhone 15 Pro, then relive them on Apple Vision Pro. Available later this year on iPhone 15 Pro [Shows two cameras side-by-side on iPhone 15 Pro]

....

A pair of high-resolution cameras transmit over one billion pixels per second to the displays so you can see the world around you clearly. The system also helps deliver precise head and hand tracking and real‑time 3D mapping, all while understanding your hand gestures from a wide range of positions.
And article on how the new iPhones make spatial videos:
https://techcrunch.com/2023/09/12/ap...le-vision-pro/
Quote:
To create the videos, Apple says it’s using the ultrawide and main cameras together to create a three-dimensional video. The idea is that it will be easier for people to capture videos using the phone they have with them all the time, instead of some separate device, so they won’t miss recording a special moment. In the example Apple provided, the company used the iPhone 15 Pro to record a family’s beach vacation.
It looks like you'd have to hold the phone in portrait mode for the cameras to line up correctly.

https://www.theverge.com/2023/9/12/2...deo-vision-pro

So it's stereoscopic, i.e. two cameras side by side.

Do web series count? Cause there's also Crime Squad 3D:

I wonder what else Apple have lined up. Foundation filmed in 3d would be incredible.

The only way creating a new 3D format for the Apple walled garden helps 3D is if they license the technology and others take it up. Or if their content can be converted to a standards based 3D format which is similar to where we are with 3D VR conversions which is not optimal.

I wish some small label would license some of those 3net shows to disc. More appealing to me than Ai conversions of old movies……

This is a new TV show shot in 3D using spatial video which I suppose is Apple's proprietary 3D. They must have developed new cameras or used the iPhone 15 pro. If the new camera is as easy to use as 2D cameras then it would make sense for Apple to record everything going forward in 3D spatial video. So there will be plenty of new 3d content. I would guess that it would require Vision Pro though as I see this as somehting to sell their expensive VR. But perhaps they will make a future Apple TV support this for those of us with 3D displays.

According to IMDB, Monarch was shot on the Arri Alexa LF and Arri Alexa Mini LF. Still not sure what kind of rig they used.

You don't shoot something with this budget on an iPhone, and the iPhone 15 Pro's tiny fixed interaxial is not adequate for any 3D video besides home movies and macro photography.
