![]() I still think someone mastered this release and the Pirates of the Caribbean movies at the wrong HDR settings. They are WAAAAAAY too dark especially comparing them to other basically SDR releases in HDR wrappers like BR 2049, which was supervised by the Oscar winning DP. |

You should probably wrap that in a spoiler tag.

I put my old blu-ray cover art for Heat over the 4K cover. I mostly just like the blue spine better than red.

I bought it for the same price and I just now compared the 4k and 2017. People can argue over which one is more accurate, but I'm sticking with the blu. This 4k doesn't look good to me and so I still feel ripped off by the 4 dollar price point. The case has a lot of off gassing and so even the case is worthless.

It also arrived with the slip cover and the case and discs were in perfect condition. Solid value for me. But I understand how some fans might feel disgruntled. |

On my LG C1, without any TV image "enhancements", the highlights certainly look particularly dim, as if there had been some mistake during the preparation of the disk. The issue is not that "the movie is too dark". I don't mind Mann wanting to grade his movie darker and less colorful. The issue is an overall lack of contrast. During sunlit scenes or in night scenes with characters' faces or hair being lit by their appartments' lights, it all looks as if I was wearing sunglasses and the highlights are not at proper levels.
When I activate tone mapping on the TV it looks MUCH better. So either there was a mastering error, or there's an issue with some TVs not displaying the HDR data of this movie correctly, but there's definitely a problem somewhere. Just tested Escape from New York WITHOUT tone mapping or other enhancements for comparison, it looks fine. |

I bought a LG C3 65 inch OLED a couple of weeks ago. I prefer watching the "Heat" 4K with dynamic tone mapping on. Looks great that way to me. If watching it in a completely dark room, I can get by cutting dynamic tone mapping off but I do like putting the expression enhancer setting on brightness for some extra contrast boost without lifting black levels. But overall dynamic tone mapping cut on is the way to go for me with this particular 4K disc.

Visiting my sister for a few days, she just bought a new SAMSUNG 65-Inch Class OLED 4K S95C Series Quantum TV, and just for kicks tried the Movies Anywhere stream on it which I found just as unwatchably dim as my actual disk on my 50 inch at home, and what to my wonderous eyes should appear, but a decently lit version.
I’m not going to call it bright, because it ain’t, but at least its watchable in dynamic mode. Tried the Filmakers mode but, that’s even dimmer than the disc. It gives me a headache. It also looks like it has a yellowy tinge to it for some reason. |

So somehow I had never seen this but I watched it for the first time last night on my 75" Sony Z9K (mini-LED flagship from last year) in custom (reference) picture mode in a light-controlled theater. While dim it was far from unwatchable. That dimness made for an obviously stylized presentation but it was still enjoyable and nothing was obscured.
I expected a train wreck. ![]() Keep in mind...again - first time watcher. I don't have any experience with how it was presented in previous releases. |

Even in broad daylight scenes it's not bright. As I said, I was surprised by how much better the MA stream looked on my sister's TV than on mine. There's a reason it's down to $8.99 everywhere. |
