I grabbed 4ks of The Guest and Dog Soldiers that I've been procrastinating on picking up, plus the region free blu of Flight of the Navigator. For the cheap price point and all the extras I figured it would be a fun trip down memory lane as I haven't viewed it since I was a child. And even though it wasn't on sale, I tossed in the 4k of TCM for good measure.

Was shipping a killer? I didn't see the actual rates on the website, but I just did a glance.

Shipping was $15.08 GBP for 3 titles...when I added a fourth it didn't jump any higher, so not sure if there's an option for it go any lower. For these import titles I always factor that at some point or another you're gonna have to cave on shipping. I got 1 blu + 3 4ks and it'll come out to ~$90 USD shipped. Not a bargain by any means, but if they're titles you've patiently been waiting on, odds are this is the best deal you're gonna get imo. For example, these 4 titles would've cost ~$106 shipped from Orbit, and that's assuming they're all in stock at the same time allowing me to use their free shipping code.

Ordered 10 movies and the shipping was £24 for me.

Easier to find on Amazon, but once you know which ones you want, you could just as easily order from Wally. Or you could choose to price match at another major retailer, such as BB. I think I'll do the later, as I have a $25 credit expiring in 7 days.

This means I could by Jackie Chan Vol.1 for $29 right now!
What am I still doing here? GTG. THX.
And I actually have a GC from Christmas @ Amazon, so I'm heavily contemplating buying V2. Also Shout's online site (who had this at $49.99 a little while back) annoys the crap out of me. About the only boutique site that makes me want to buy their products anywhere else (and mostly do).

Anyone hear of any dates for when shout’s Shocktober sale may be this year? Not that I expect to receive anything before Halloween but I have a few I’m looking forward to picking up.

Has anyone heard when Shout's Shocktober sale will be this year? I saw last year's was from Thursday, 9/29 to Monday, 10/7. Ordering earlier gives a better chance of receiving before Halloween.

I went to the VCI site and couldn't work out a way to navigate through their catalog. There's a banner noting the sale, but no link to the sale titles. Searched for "fall deals", no dice. Searched for "halloween", it displayed three titles, so I just had to click on the Blu-rays link and peruse it all (thankfully only 123 releases!) Surprisingly, a bunch of horror films didn't get the sale status, but enough for me to maybe grab 3-4 items.

Didn't see anything on their site about a "Shocktober" sale, so I clicked on the link to their blog, which noted a "Love Is In The Scare Sale 2023" sale; reading further it mentioned five films and a series ([REC]), but provided no links to anything. So, meh.

Nothing has even been hinted yet about Shocktober. I’m expecting it to start sometime this upcoming week, but only Shout knows.

Halloween Sale

Just a couple of things I noticed:

Jack Armstrong (which was just released back in August) is on sale for $11.98

The Green Hornet serial blu-ray is also on sale for $11.98

Noir Archive Volume 1 and Volume 2 (from Kit Parker Films) are on sale for $24.98 each

The 4K release of Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things is on sale for $13.98

Journey Into the Beyond (released last month on blu-ray) is on sale for $9.98

Dark Star (John Carpenter) blu-ray is on sale for $7.98

The El Santo 8 Film collection blu-ray is on sale for $27.98

The sales both seem to end on October 9th

Is there any consensus on the vintage Mexican titles VCI has? I remember that some of them had no English subs or dubbing on them and they were all strictly Spanish. And I think other ones had English dubbing, but it was done by VCI community playhouse actors or something? I've come across some of these on YouTube and they are TERRIBLE! I'm wondering if there is even one single Mexican movie release by VCI that is worth picking up?

I can personally recommend the Serial Blus, they are nicely done for the most part and very entertaining, but I think by the design of them being serials they don't yield a lot of repeat value. I also am a big fan of the Kit Parker NOIR Archive sets. You get a lot of bang for your buck on them and I have found the transfers to be more than worthwhile upgrades from the DVDs, if there even were any. All vintage Columbia Noir titles which I'm guessing may not see the light of day from any other labels? Columbia was arguably the best studio making Noirs in the 50's.

Shout at walmart is way cheaper, bull moose too, with them you get points to use and I got Night of the Demons for $12.99 (kind of upset with this one since it started at $14.99 and went down, which while that's great the price lowered but it also means I lost a few points in the process) and Silver Bullet for $14.99. But both places their regular pricing is sometimes better then Shout's sales.

I have the El Santo 8 film set (which I picked up fairly soon after it came out). I've watched the first two movies -- Santo in the Wax Musem (black and white) and Santo in the Treasure of Dracula (color). I quite enjoyed both, but they are certainly not going to appeal to everyone. They are campy movies in which Santo is sort of Batman-style figure with a secret hideout who investigates crime while also competing as a professional wrestler by day. There are times in the movies where the guy has to "go to the arena" and has a full wrestling match against someone before the plot gets back on track. I find that bizarrely entertaining, but can see how some people would be turned off by it. The second film (Treasure of Dracula) is also pretty out there in that this pro wrestler/crimefighting hero also happens to be a scientist with a time machine that allows him to see events in the past on a viewing screen.

They are dubbed in English and there is no original Spanish soundtrack. There's a video on YouTube where the president of VCI discusses that release and said that they were not allowed to license the original Spanish soundtracks to go along with the videos so they used dubs instead. I have no idea if they used an older dub track or if they had to create that themselves, though. But overall, I thought both dubs were fine.

I also have the Aztec Mummy 3 film collection, but have yet to watch any of those. Those are also dubbed in English.

Several of the others seem to have the original Spanish audio tracks (and no dubbed track options).

Here’s a forum user review on the audio dub for one of the Santo movies in the set: SANTO INTHE TREASURE OF DRACULA:

It's good to have the color nudity version, though, and I knew what this release would be going in, but I'm holding on to the Rise Above DVD's for the B/W Spanish-language versions.
So it’s a brand new English dub, likely from the same VCI employee repertory company of actors I sampled on YouTube and thought was awful.

Are the Shout Factory/Arrow Video sales not happening until the end of October? I expected the sales to start today.

I believe the Shout Factory sale is usually the first week of October so probably sometime later this week.

Just a head's up, but I don't think the version included in the 8 film set is the one with nudity. I think you have to buy this separate release for anyone who specifically wants that:

The description of the 8 film set on VCI's site mentions that the Treasure of Dracula film is the one w/o nudity. That site has a Vimeo playlist with samples of each of the 8 movies for anyone who wants to hear the dubs.

There's also a playlist for the longer version from the product page as well that shows some of the mid-movie wrestling scenes.

I guess it was sort of what I expected from most English dubs (but admittedly, I've mostly heard dubs from old martial arts films that are usually pretty ridiculous). But definitely folks should sample the clips to make sure it wouldn't detract from their enjoyment of the films.
