Luckily, I own both releases.
Unreal. I can absolutely understanding regular bonus features being on the Blu-ray (and I actually prefer it to free up more space for the feature), but why would we want to listen to an audio commentary with an inferior transfer?

Pre-order cancelled.

I do not like this developing trend. Does anyone know any other 4K releases that relegate commentaries to the Blu only? It seems like Sony’s Cliffhanger does the same.

Yes, it extremely annoying. I'm never been too interested in commentaries, so this doesn't affect me by much. But, it's still shouldn't be done and is really stupid of Sony to have done.

I've said this before, but I think they're doing this intentionally so they can have a reason to do yet another edition in the future that also includes the extras on the 4K disc.

I wish that site updates more. The last update was last september. I've gotten into the habit of ripping the commentaries myself.

Those dastards!

The sad thing is the first release did contain them. The first release had approximately 1.5 gigabytes of free space. While the 25th Anniversary has approximately 14 gigabytes of free space, give-or-take. So, theoretically they could've put all the extras on the 25th.

Begs the question: if a specific feature is audio related then why does the PQ matter at all?

That makes zero sense to me. Sony aren’t going to be reauthoring these yet again just to add the commentaries back in.

Not just the commentaries, all the extras on the 4K disc and drop the BD entirely. They're re-authoring some of them just for the Dolby layer and nothing else, so I don't see why they wouldn't do it a third time. Besides, this is the same route they took with BDs: regular edition with extras -> barebones Mi4K release -> Mi4K encode with extras.

Not saying they're going to do this for all of them, but it's certainly a possibility with the really popular ones, which Starship Troopers is definitely a part of.

Because audio commentaries accompany the film and we invest in 4K technology to watch the best version of the film.

Usually when I rewatch a movie, I rewatch it with commentary. I will listen to commentaries multiple times.

Double post but, Bridge on the River Kwai already got reauthored twice (for different reasons but still). And seeing as they're doing Resident Evil now, once they get around to Underworld, the first entry will also have been redone twice.

Yes, to add things like OG audio and/Dobly vision. If something’s got all that already they are not going to reauthor it yet again just to add the commentary back in. That’s insane. Nor will they do it just to cram on all the bonus features and drop the Blu, that’s too much expense for too little gain considering it costs buttons to pack in an existing Blu.

Yes, but those are newer releases. The direction they take with those re: cost savings is up to them because they’re starting fresh, but it’s not worth the thousands of dollars needed to reauthor an extant disc just to add on the extras when they’ve already got another round piece of plastic that they can include to do the job. You can’t do that with Dobly or OG audio.

Oh, and as for the one re-release in the SPC set, Crouching Tiger, the original UHD had the extras on it already for whatever reasons so even the SPC version having them is no big deal.

Saw a notice at Canadian distributor that the Steelbook is discontinued. Probably not a surprise there, but if you want it, I'd suggest you get it now while prices are still reasonable. Same for Bram Stoker's Dracula SB.

Got it! Already ordered it late last month when the price dropped to $23.39, but thank you for the heads up either way, for the rest of us. It's not to be missed at this great price!

I’m currently watching Starship Troopers and wow, the 4K transfer looks exceptional. I have not seen this movie in quite some time but it was one of my favorites back then. Glad I decided to pick up the Steelbook while the price was right.

Seems like the 20th anniversary edition is becoming more scarce? Prices are going up...

Nah there's plenty out there of that edition. However, there has been a resurgence in interest for the film and novel over a video game with similar themes.

The 25th anniversary steelbook reprint appears to have sold out so that would explain the sudden interest in the 20th anniversary regular release. It's not even at PleaseRewind anymore.
