Default Why did Patrick Swayze’s career fizzle out after Point Break?

After watching the excellent Point Break for the first time I researched SwayE’s career and noticed after this movie, he wasn’t really in any major successful movies after. I would assume his injuries in the late 90s played a role but even then it was about 6 years after Point Break was out. Even in ‘91 he was named “sexiest man alive,” so why do you think his falloff happened? I know Point Break didn’t really do all that well when it first came out so did the studios just blame
It all on him? But it’s not like it completely bombed

Poor career choices (City of Joy, Father Hood) combined with his decision to take a step back from acting after dealing with his alcoholism. By the time he returned to acting, he had to deal with other health issues which ultimately led to his cancer diagnosis and death.

He was going through rehab for alcoholism in the 90's and broke both legs in a movie at some point.

He has bad taste in projects. He has always wanted to be more of the Harrison Ford type of actor.

Swayze had an amazing if short run of smash hits.

He could draw in audiences of both genders.

Dirty Dancing and Ghost for the ladies, and Road House and Point Break for the gents.

There's an outstanding documentary on Swayze (put together by his widow) called "I am Patrick Swayze" that I highly recommend. It's available on Amazon prime for free right now.

I thought Point Break was for the dames too, and the bros were out watching Swayze's take on Mad Max, Steel Dawn?

Steel Dawn was not a smash hit, and really sucks.

Swayze was really well cast in Donnie Darko tho, went out like a champ!

Hell, I'll take Ghost over Road House any day.

I really enjoyed his work in Donnie Darko. It was a small but pivotal role, and I think it was pretty gutsy of an established actor to play that part. And, the large drawing of him
[Show spoiler]is in his home and destroyed by flames
was a copy of a drawing done by his wife.

I’ve always wondered the same thing. Dude could have been a massive movie star beyond Point Break but he seemed to choose a lot of terrible roles.

There are plenty of actors not considered good who had long-term success. I don't think that is it at all. It was more than likely the choices made...

Patrick Swayze's best performance was as Orry Main in North and South and I refuse to hear any other opinion .

I always found him to be a good actor. Never saw a performance where I said, “that was awful!”

He was in alot of really cool movies that I like...The Outsiders, Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing, Road House, Ghost, Point Break, Black Dog, and I really liked his last show on A&E, The Beast. Was really looking forward to a season 2, but then he passed. Great actor in my opinion.

Everyone and their grandparents have seen The Outsiders. The question is, have you seen North and South?
