It's with Warner, and they own it outright.

Didn't we hear from somewhere that Barry Lydon has a new 4K scan that was shown in some places?

I fully expect Criterion to announce this.

Lolita seems like it could become the last one to get the UHD upgrade at this rate.

Basically, it seems that the film has certain scenes that were shot in both in English and French, and both cuts of the film were remastered in 4K from the original camera negatives by Gaumont and VDM in France. The French version is presented in 1.66:1, while the English version is 1.85:1. The difference in run times seems to be less than a minute, so perhaps seagal is thinking of the US PG cut of the film, which apparently deletes some scenes, including one in a strip club with full-frontal nudity. Although the MGM DVD-R says it runs 105 minutes, it is also said to have the aforementioned nudity, so I am guessing the 105-minute run time is a misprint and the DVD-R actually runs 110/111 minutes.

Gaumont placed both cuts (~222 minutes) on a single BD-50 with almost 60 minutes of video extras, with the result that both cuts get about 20 GB of space. There are only French / French SDH subtitles, so the Gaumont disc is not fully English-friendly.

Presumably, Kino's Blu-ray will come from Gaumont's restoration and either include only the English language version or both versions, hopefully on two discs if that is the case.

The restoration is problematic.

The color grade is, quite predictably, bad. It dials in turquoise, it dials out primary blue -- a common flaw on modern (re)masters. In many places, gamma levels are off, so the dynamic range of the visuals is skewed as well. It is hard to tell if this is how the film was "restored", or the master finalized, but it is what you will see on the French Blu-ray release.

You speculate that there is an error on the U.S. DVD release, but there isn't. The running time is 105 minutes. MGM's master is very nice -- for a DVD release. If there is a high-definition master with the same color grade, it would be an excellent alternative to the French restoration.

The difference in quality -- and not in favor of the French restoration -- is very similar to what you would observe between the two presentations of Rene Clement's Rider on the Rain. One of these presentations is not right.

Interesting. I wonder what the two 110/111-minute versions on the Gaumont BD are, then. Unless the reviewer got one of the run times incorrect. Otherwise it would seem that there could be three or four cuts, assuming that the PG version is different to the MGM disc.

For what it is worth, our local film museum showed an absolutely gorgeous 4K restoration of Barry Lyndon last month. Easily among the top five cinema experiences I have had this year.

Yet another Masters of Cinema release I'll be able to part with.
Kubrick himself called up UCLA the night it was scheduled to play there to the public and requested it not be shown. He is likely spinning in his grave now with this announcement.

I hope you include Iron Man (1951). Like most of the film noir sets you've released, it's from Universal, starring Jeff Chandler as a coal miner turned boxer whose life is turned upside down by success, with a young Rock Hudson in a small supporting role.

He should have asked Mystery Science Theater 3000 to riff it. Would have been a great episode. It doesn't harm his legacy. I mean, better he made his mistakes on this film as it made Killer's Kiss that much better. By the time he made The Killing, he's already a master.

No, I don't think it harms his legacy, but he was obviously a perfectionist and wished it would never be shown anywhere ever again. I can respect that, especially when I see people saying it's his "worst" film, an assessment which he no doubt hoped to avoid by suppressing it.

Two hundred years from now watch that be the only film of his that still survives. I can see him punching a cloud right now

I get it, ..... man.

But there is zero logic in having chapters without an easy way to access them. Having to manually chapter-skip 20 chapters or so to a spot toward the end of the movie is just ludicrously stupid. It's laziness on Kino's part.

LOL. True. Sometimes we get thumbnails on the chapter-select that are so vague that you can't tell what it is you're looking at.

"Uh...that's a picture of a mountain. I have no idea where that is in the movie."

Got a ship notice for my Cujo preorder today. Weird thing is that I also preordered two of the Kino Cult titles, but it doesn't say they are in there~though the total charged does reflect all 3 titles...Hopefully all 3 will be coming anyhow...
