Both share the same master and the Criterion looks only marginally better than the TT.

A damn amazing January for Criterion announcements. I hope to buy Lone Star, Trainspotting and possibly the 4K edition of Blood Simple. Great to finally see another John Sayles film in the collection!

Also, please excuse me for my delayed reaction, as I'm still on location in Israel shooting crazy wartime footage of what's going on here (but not near Gaza). This morning I had 5 IDF soldiers in my backyard and I got some video of that.

In a few years, look for my film to be in the Criterion Collection!

I find it warped that such a British made classic like Trainspotting is getting the 4K treatment in the USA but not here. Especially when the U.K. Blu was, in my opinion, botched with annoying telecine wobble.
Come on Film Four, get it sorted!

As I remember it, Studio Canal gave the license to Criterion for releasing The Third Man, then a couple of years later took back the license and issued their own distinctly inferior release. Now that I think of it, TCM uses a lot of Criterion prints for their films (presumably they've retained some contractual links since the days of Filmstruck), but I'm not sure which print they're using when they show TTM.

I've been wary of SC ever since the BD of The Ladykillers, I was shocked at how inferior it was to the version that I had seen several times on TCM before the SC BD was released.

I always forget but do the flash sales include pre-orders? I'd like to grab The Others if I can.

This has always been the case though, the Apu Trilogy doesn’t have an Indian Blu-ray either, plenty of American films have to be imported from other territories, Hong Kong films aren’t getting the lavish treatments domestically compared to what’s coming out in the UK/US, and plenty of British films hit US cinemas long before they play in the UK. I can’t imagine it will get a UK 4K release either, unless Film4 maybe license to the BFI - the only glimmer of hope is Film4 have released a few new Blu-rays recently like Local Hero, Career Girls, Proof, Wish You Were Here.

This was from someone who was answering on behalf of Jon.
I feel like Criterion would send that reply even if an upgrade was on the cards.

No. In-stock only. I'd like to grab The Others as well, but I can wait a couple of weeks for the B&N sale.

I remember people saying something like, Studio Canal was not interested in cherry-picking licensors - they transferred a bulk license for a huge chunk of catalog to Lionsgate in the US. So Criterion was not able to renew licenses for Third Man, Man Who Fell to Earth, Ran, Paris, Texas and several other movies. Apparently, they still have David Lynch only because of Lynch's special relationship with the people at Criterion. That's what I heard anyway.

Everything I've read suggests Studiocanal retained rights to The Third Man, unlike the others they've licensed back to Criterion.

Especially true for silent pictures with their tinting and ability to make shadows come alive. We need more silent movies on 4K!

I don't know, maybe one of these months they'll release 4K of Tokyo Story, Barry Lyndon and Pat Garrett (and Black Narcissus and A Matter of Life and Death and Colonel Blimp and ....), and whiners like me will eat our words. But it seems like one can keep adding films that should be in the Criterion wheelhouse, many that aren't even on BD, others for which we know much better transfers are available, and no sign we are getting any closer to seeing any of these films. I mean, we're talking about the B&W films of two of the greatest British filmmakers, with a huge influence on filmmakers today, but it seems like an obscure Italian giallo has a better chance of seeing a (4K!) release today.
It's Powell and Pressburger's own fault for never taking the time to learn about Kung Fu.

Hey, if the folks with the torches and the pitchforks get too much for you, feel free to send them over to me as I can't stand Christopher Nolan or Takashi Mikke and Spielberg only occasion.

I want to see Lynch smoking in the Criterion closet and swearing up a storm as he fills TWO bags of freebies!

Speaking of the upcoming flash sale ...

It's been years since I have ordered direct from Criterion (not since my cousin was dating some jazz club owner in NY in the 00s, and I could get hik to forward all my sales orders).

How is Criterion's shipping/ packaging these days? As I have probably demonstrated ad nauseum here, I am a bit sensitive, particularly to crushed corners. So, can one expect digipaks and boxes to arrive just fine, or would it be more wise for someone like me to pay full price and order from one of the smaller specialty shops, who er really good at packing stuff?

Also, how are Criterion when it comes to exchanging scratched discs/ damaged packaging?
