If Disney/Fox decide to put Titanic out in 4K, would it share the same encode as the Paramount disc?

I'm curious if the movie will be included on the Blu-ray disc as well. From the specs given on the back of the slipcover it looks like a possibility. I like to have a movie on both 4K and Blu-ray in the same set if possible so I can do away with the previous copy.

The movie will just be on the UHD. The back cover states "4K Ultra High Definition Widescreen" and "Blu-ray Special Features". There's no way they'd cram a 3+ hr movie onto a single BD-50 along with 15 hours of extras.

There was a missed opportunity for so many paths with this release:
* 16:9 3D 4K as you mentioned (the open matte 3D ratio from 2012)
* 16:9 non-3D 4K
* Fan Cut - but arguably this will never happen as JC considers Titanic as released to be the "perfect cut" of the film
* As others have mentioned, the deleted scenes from JC's Titanic Explorer that never really surfaced elsewhere (maybe even just porting it to a usable state for modern PCs)
* Isolated film score cut (that would be incredible for this movie)
* A better collector's edition - this one is great and I'll be picking it up regardless, but I mean...come on - so many possibilities (Heart of the Ocean Replica, Jack's sketchbook, a better box ALA the 2012 release, maybe a box resembling Cal's safe, etc. etc.)

I dunno...was it a missed opportunity? There's already 15 hours of extras on this thing. The making-of docs that already exist are exhaustive in the amount of material they cover.

The 16:9 version was also never the film's intended ratio, so it's absolutely no surprise that it isn't being included and never has aside from the 3D version. Furthermore, given that they don't make 3D TVs anymore, it would be sorta pointless to put the 3D version on this release. The fanedit (like you mentioned) was also never going to be included as it's an unauthorized cut of the film. The added scenes also drag the pace and IMO Cameron was right to cut those scenes out. I think the version that was originally released in theatres in 1997 already has perfect pacing, the film doesn't need to be 4 hours long.

I just want a good encode on the UHD. That's all I ask.

The film is already 3 hours we don’t need to have more hours added. But there’s no reason why JC couldn’t have added the Deleted Scenes to the extras.

The deleted scenes I'd be down for, definitely. But otherwise I think they're including pretty much all that needs to be included.

This is one movie I never needed or wanted extra stuff with. Just the 4K, maybe disc in the future. I have the 3D blu which I've been fine with. One the 4K digital is cheap (or the disc), then I'll get that. Regarding that last part, I think it's time now is too long. They could have trimmed 20-30 minutes and it would have "flowed" better, so to speak. But I agree, just give us a good 4K transfer.

That, and the deleted scenes carried over from the Blu-ray release so I don't have to keep 2 copies. "Over 15 hours of bonus content" mentioned on the back cover yet the only specifics we have are a documentary, fan art gallery and 3 audio commentaries. Really curious to know what the "And so much more" is.

If it happens that is, there’s no hint to it happening outside of US/Canada.

So far, nothing indeed. And Disney already has an infamous reputation of neglecting markets outside the US ever since the DVD era, if not earlier.

And all the news outlets are like “Titanic has finally arrived on 4K UHD.” I’m like, no it hasn’t not for the rest of the world.

I’m still angry over what Arrow Video did with Chucky….i mean all that build up to deliver a boxset with the best film in the franchise on an old ass 2012 Blu-ray with the rest on UHD format…..

It’s moments like this I wish the distributors had a window where you could contact them about their upcoming releases and ask if it’s coming or not. I hate waiting.

Waiting this long for this release of Titanic, it’s as if they have done a total re haul of the cinema release and changed things or added more extras to the discs but so far don’t think that’s the case.

Why would you have to keep 2 copies? I think it's pretty clear that when they say "And so much more", they're referring to the extras that were previously released. The newly produced extras will likely just be on the UHD, and the bonus disc will be the same bonus disc that came with the first BD release.

The 3 commentaries make up about 9 hours of extras, and the additional features (that were on the previous BD) make up about 6 hours' worth of bonus content. Roughly 15 hours total.

Locking a 3D disc this way feels just as exploitative as region locking UHDs. Granted, there are very few 3D discs that offer any benefits over the existing 2D (Top Gun was another one, prior to Paramount doing the 4K), but I don't understand why you wouldn't let someone watch it in 2D when the files are already there.
Top Gun 3D was another ‘locked’ title, funnily enough.

It’s more that 3D is meant to be viewed in 3D, if that makes sense. It’s graded for that darker system, if it’s 3D converted there’ll be visible artefacts of that process, and some movies will have floating windows (black bars at the sides to prevent edge violations). Yes, it was part of the 3D Blu spec that the left eye be 2D compatible, but some decided that they didn’t want them to be viewed in 2D.

I agree. So many chances to make this an even better set. Especially the extended/alternative ending edition as well as the open matte. Both are worthy of JCs attention to include them as a "fans extra" for one of the most loved films of the last 30 years. Beggers belief why he just can't release them.
I suppose having a version of both the extended and open matte "privately" is something I'm quite happy to have though. Ableit not in physical format.

The back cover literally says “new content on Blu-ray only”, it’s rather funny that people keep missing it

Lol guys we were NEVER going to get the fanedit on this release, so there was no "missed opportunity" because that's all they are. Fan edits. They're unauthorized cuts of the movie and only really exist for curiosity's sake.

This isn't a case like, say, Blade Runner, where the various edits were either studio or director-approved.
