Watched it last night in DC and it's a masterpiece. Can't wait to watch it in 4K DV/Atmos on ATV+, when that premieres. I sure hope they release a 4K disc.

My DC screening was about 75% full and I only saw 3-4 people leave when there would have been maybe 45-minutes left. Their loss.

Unlikely. Nolan’s syncs up with a world on the verge of WW3.

These “masterpiece” raves are gonna look awfully silly a year from now. It’s Power of the Dog all over again.

I doubt it. Scorsese movies typically age well.

i think several have aged poorly. You don't see anyone talking about Gangs of New Work, Aviator, Shutter Island, even the Departed.

Which is a pity as I find neither to be deserving of "best of year" honors. According to me neither film should be nominated for best picture or best director , i wish some films that are going to inevitably ignored had a chance.

Never say never, but I would say the mere fact this was helmed by someone of Scorsese's stature gives this a significantly different position in our community than movies by less prominent directors. I say that in a "for better or worse" way, not with disrespect for Campion.

There's also something to be said for this film representing the increasingly impressive final films a director could possibly be associated with, even next to some of the other storied directors currently active. Rather than continually churning out his famous formula like Casino, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York, he's doing comparatively quieter, contemplative films with startling quality (to many; if you don't like it then that's completely fine), like Silence, The Irishman, and now this.

I don't think this film will become part of the culture the way Jaws, Goodfellas, even Kill Bill has endured, if that's what you mean. But will it remain an appreciated film after the awards have been, well, awarded? I think it will be. But like Silence or other similarly "quiet" movies, it can continue flying under the radar without being actually forgotten.

Absolutely not. Power of the Dog was terrible.

I have a suspicion that slumcat doesn’t like Leonardo DiCaprio.

Some of his post history, I don’t think he likes anything. I only ever see him complain.

I think we are far from that. I get the fear of atomic bomb is always prevalent but don't think we are at the verge of that. This might fall for the category of "another WWII movie" to the academy and they will give the award to a story like Killers of the Flower Moon, a really american horror story that was ignored for a long time.

I hope this happens, the meltdowns from people that pretend like they don’t care about the Oscars would be glorious! So many grown men crying and screaming at an awards show they “don’t like”.

This movie is basically an arthouse film (a $200M one at that). But because of the people involved and the marketing behind it, it's exposed do a much wider audience than your typical indie movie, which will likely lead to a more polarizing response.

A good list of good movies imo.
I think your post will age poorly, unlike KOTFM.

I’m so sorry… what? The Departed remains a very popular and well known movie more than 15 years after its release. It’s even referenced in the recent The Fall of the House of Usher. It’s a movie that is still brought up in conversations pretty frequently. It’s also in the IMDB top 50 which is a good indicator of “popular” movies, especially newer ones (this puts it ahead of movies like Oppenheimer and Casablanca). It’ll also likely go down as Scorsese’s only best picture and best director Oscar wins.

It’s fine if YOU don’t like it, but it’s a very popular film with an enduring legacy.

Shutter Island also remains a pretty popular and well regarded film.
