+1....Ridley Scott today is not the Ridley Scott of old. In Scott's early days, he was known for his penchant at creating his uniquely moody & atmospheric visual style, sometimes at the expense of good storytelling or character development....altho the visual worlds he created were very much integral to the story; such as in Blade Runner, Legend, Black Rain, and of course, Alien. In recent years, Scott's trademark visual sensibilities have been mostly absent. Perhaps as a result of earlier critical feedback, he has chosen to focus more on story & character, and ultimately, to be more accessible and mainstream. For me, I think the turning point in Scott's career was in 1991's multiple Academy nominated 'Thelma and Louise'. I believe it was the critical success that it was -- was for the first time, Scott had achieved the perfect blend of style AND substance. Btw, would LOVE to see 'T&L' on Blu one day...

So, as 'werewuf' ponders; whether the 'old' Ridley shows up, which may not work for today's over-the-top action-oriented audience (esp for this genre), or whether it's the more recent Ridley, which would preclude a decidedly direction, remains to be seen. Being from the school of old, I hope it'll be 'classic' Ridley.

You guys are thinking of Aliens, not Alien. In the first one, they were a mining ship or something like that on their way back to Earth and were awoken by a signal their ship received. According to the captain, by law they had to go check it out in case it was intelligent life. They go to a planet and find an underground cave with a spaceship inside, and when they go to investigate, one of the crew members finds eggs, one of which hatches and attaches itself to his face.

Thank God Scott came by to re-direct Alien. If it were other directors other than him and Cameron, I would faint. Thank you, Ridley!

good news i guess. this is definitely interesting to have the original director return for a prequel after several sequels have come out.

Ridley Scott hasn't made a good movie since 1982. I would be more interested if it had been Tony Scott, he still pumps out a good one now and then.

I love and hate this news all at once.

I love it because Ridley is the man and I know he'll do it justice.

And I hate it because this means the blu-ray boxed set will probably be postponed.

This is awesome news! I just hope it's better than Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection.

you figure this project will be a very creative challange for Ridley to take on. But with a prequel he's got new ground to explore and we may finally get to see 'the company' in action. You figure in Alien vs Predator which if I'm not mistaken represents a kinda prequel to Alien in the sense of Lance Henriksen's Charles Bishop Weyland character as the guy who owns the company that will eventually send the ill fated Nostromo to LV-426. Also Scott's tone and overall look will not nessessarily have to match the original storyline, but obviously toward the end of the film depending on the timeline from the prequel story to the original will have to match seemlessly just as James Cameron did with the opening sequence to Aliens. Plus they may or may not have to re-introduce the main characters from Alien at the end of the prequel for story sake. So therefore they will have to cast actor's that closely resemble Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Yaphet Kotto. Either way this will be a very interesting movie once it get's into production and a cast has been put together. Who knows, maybe Ridley will cast alumni from each sequel in new roles ofcourse as a nestolgia gift to the fans of the entire franchise. As long as the movie has a credible director, the potential is there.

Good news and I hope they scrap the entire AVP storyline which is an insult to both franchises IMO.

But like others have already stated, Ridley of today is not the same Director of yesteryear.

I hope he can bring H.R. Giger back into the mix as well and rebuild this terrifying yet beautiful world again.

It's a different era of film making so I'd be very surprised if Ridley slows down the pacing of the film and uses this as a means of building tension, as opposed to an all out, in your face blood fest.

I agree. Hopefully we also get great creature effects with little cgi for the alien/aliens. Granted Stan Winston is no longer with us.

But who (besides the alien) were originally at LV-426? Wasn't the Nostromo sent there in response to some distress signal from LV-426 at the Company's direction? Who/what sent the distress signal? The Aliens? Another race of extraterrestials? Or was the distress signal a setup by the company? Me confused!

BTW, great news on Scott, if this film will ever be a success, he's the guy that can pull it off.

Go watch the movie again. It's a classic and you can re-educate yourself at the same time.

I don't mean to sound skeptical, but I don't believe anything that says Ridley's attached to something until I see set photos with him behind the camera. I mean there's Monopoloy, The Forever War, Brave New World, The Kind One, Alien, etc. The list goes on.

The guy can only do one film at a time, yet it seems he's attached to direct like five things.

To the people bashing Ridley, you are entitled to your opinions of course, but I respectfully disagree. He's just as good as ever. For the life of me I don't understand why he continues to align himself with FOX, a studio that won't give him final cut. At least we see Ridely's version on blu-ray with important scenes added back in.
