The 4K will look better than both, but it seems very likely that Cameron erased at least most of the film grain, hence why it is not as sharp as it could be. But if they were able to somehow not make it look significantly waxy, and more like softness from how it was shot, then it will not be too bad. With Cameron, we have to be happy enough with this. It will be far from an atrocity, but it could be better, sharper and more detailed.

Point is: since it probably won't look like film, I hope that it at least looks like a digital film that was shot with slightly soft focus, instead of significant waxiness.

Many transfers deserve harsh criticism for strong and inaccurate teal color timing. That said, I don't think that a bit of teal looks too off in a movie as dominated by blue, and colors close to blue (such as teal), as The Abyss is. It really is a matter of taste.

By the way, I can't help but laugh at the description that canva.com gives to the color teal, which I quote below. In these forums, teal is anything but calming. Teal seems to be the worst nightmare of some members, it feels like maybe some users here go to sleep thinking about teal, and also that they look for teal anywhere. In these forums, teal has become a color of disgust if anything.

"Teal combines the calming properties of blue with the renewal qualities of green. It is a revitalizing and rejuvenating color that also represents open communication and clarity of thought. For Tibetan monks, teal is symbolic of the infinity of the sea and sky, while it is the color of truth and faith for Egyptians.

Teal pops with bright white and coral, and works well with cream, navy, browns, and pinks. It also sets off metallic colors, such as silver and gold."

This is more than a bit of teal this is another Cameron blanket teal tint. Nothing looks natural in that trailer it looks completely revisionist and nothing like the original color timing.

There are a couple of shots that look normal.

The shot when he says "we're oil workers" doesn't look teal at all.
The shot of Lindsey at 0:49 is hard to gauge because there's blue reflected in the back, but MEM herself looks fine with no teal.
The shot of the sub dropping looks fine.
When Hippie is franticly looking around, that looks fine.
The bay flooding and Bud running to the door look fine.

A lot of the teal seems to come from the background.

There's definitely grain in the whole trailer, but it's hard (for me) to say if it's natural or not.

It looks like some kind of grain reduction WAS used indeed, but it's far from T2's level of visual disaster.

Do you know for sure the original color timing? I'm not saying you are wrong, but old home transfers can be very unreliable. See all the teal and piss-yellow controversy with The Three Colors UHDs. Old home videos transfers aren't reliable.

Also, Cameron clearly stated that what he wants this to be is The Abyss how he always wanted it look without any of the limitations from when it was originally made. He also promised big surprises. Cameron is shamelessly revisionist.

I'm not about to defend revisionism, I'm just not expecting there to NOT be revisionism here because this is James bloody Cameron. Guy tinkers with his films as much as George Lucas. It's standard practice at this point.

Will this restoration have the same colour timing as the LD? The DVD? Of course it won't. Have ANY of his films not been tinkered with (with the exception of Piranha II lol)??

It's also just a trailer. Save the commentary for when people actually go see this on December 6.

Why are you copying and pasting the same teal excuses in multiple threads? Just stop as everybody knows how much Cameron loves to tinker and tealing all his movies is part of that.
