Most likely, as with a lot of low budget films (especially in the 60s-70s), there was no sound recorded on set. Everything was dubbed in later to save money. "Good, the Bad, & the Ugly" is another example. Not sure of all of "Repulsion" was done this way, but it seems logical since its mostly about a girl alone in the apartment.

Thanks. The dubs are not the kind where you can "hear" that it was redone to clean it up, or because the origional was weak, or because of distracting background noise etc. I am comfortable with post production work like that. These dubs were not like that. Lips and dialogue were miles apart, like watching a Godzilla flick with the english dubs. One of the worst is early in the film in a restaurant when the young man says something about the quality of the food in front of him, the the dialogue starts before his lips move, never matches, and his lips continue to "speak" well after the statement is complete. Wacky.

Looks like you have the complete Criterion blu-ray collection! Do you have all the DVD's they've released yet so far? How about CC LD's?

I too have all the Criterion Blu's ( including all the yet to be released titles on pre-order). Not to toot my own horn or anything.

*sigh* if only I had time to watch them. Last one I finished was "The Seventh Seal" and that was probably about 2 months ago? I think I've had about 4 more come in since then, plus the 25 DVD's I picked up from the B&N sale (For under $300, so not too bad)

No LD's..... I actually never dipped into LD's

I have 260-270 of the DVDs if I had to guess..... I've given up on "completing" that collection though, and have decided to just focus on the Blu-rays, although I will pick up a DVD here or there, but have no intention of keeping up with their new releases.

I also have all of the announced ones pre-ordered...... but fortunately I've watched every one that I have at least once, with the exception of "Repulsion" which showed up on my doorstep about 30 minutes before taking that photo today

Wow Zedd...... 25 from that sale???? That's a heck of a score for Criterion titles!

Might place a Pre-order for The Complete Monterey Pop Festival. I'm pretty sure they will also do a blu-ray release of Gimmie Shelter eventually. Man, Criterion could do real justice by releasing The Beatles "Let It Be", but I'm sure Apple Corps. would'nt approve it!

Yeah I doubt we'll see that from Criterion. Hopefully Apple will at least release like they did for 'Help!'

Received 'Repulsion' today, my first Blu Criterion. Those thicker cases totally work for the collection, I think, especially without the blue border on top.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but will do that sunday, probably.

I didn't argue in the store. He applied the 50% discount twice...$50 to $25 to $12.50, then applied 10% member discount to $11.25.

Unhappy

Picked up lastrada today at b&n sale for 16.12$ as a nonmember. The 50 % plus the guy used his own 10% member plays he took off another 15.

He informed me that Rushmore will be going out of print soon because b&n can no longer order it or keep it in stock so order Rushmore now directly from Criterion backstock before they run out online.

the DVDBeaver posted reviews and screen comparisons for PLAYTIME and KAGEMUSHA

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare4/playtime.htm

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDRev...kagemusha_.htm

I was startled to notice in the specs listed how much smaller disc space these feature films were given then all the previous Criterion BD releases... very odd. I know there are a lot of special features carried over to HD also, but second disc them. I realize just because the film gets more disc space doesn't always mean it looks better had it been given more room to breath but it doesn't hurt. Just odd esp for Playtime. I mean REPULSION was insane! I was seeing that one spike to 37mbps! INSANE!

here is what his specs noted

PLAYTIME
Disc Size: 49,161,111,601 bytes
Feature: 24,532,033,536 bytes
Video Bitrate: 24.49 Mbps

KAGEMUSHA
Disc Size: 49,708,896,608 bytes
Feature: 34,499,653,632 bytes
Video Bitrate: 21.27 Mbps

Compare those specs to these....

Man Who Fell To Earth 139 mins
Disc Size: 46,413,801,268 bytes
Feature Size: 37,802,821,632 bytes
Average Bitrate: 36.20 Mbps

Repuslion 105 mins
Disc Size: 44,983,336,789 bytes
Feature: 30,681,366,528 bytes
Video Bitrate: 34.55 Mbps

Bottle Rocket 91 mins
Disc Size: 47,472,543,911 bytes
Feature Size: 26,195,122,176 bytes
Average Bitrate: 38.08 Mbps

For All Mankind 80 mins
Disc Size: 42,189,676,413 bytes
Feature: 23,995,822,080 bytes
Video Bitrate: 34.77 Mbps

Wages of Fear 148 mins
Feature: 33,451,769,856 bytes
Disc Size: 48,675,372,981 bytes
Video Bitrate: 30.10 Mbps

Seventh Seal 97 mins
Disc Size: 48,693,969,438 bytes
Feature: 28,593,420,288 bytes
Video Bitrate: 34.49 Mbps

I guess what I am shocked by is that Playtime and Kagemusha have been given very low bit rates per second in the encoding.... very low compared to their running times and bit rates per second on all other titles.

Well this is going to be a good Saturday, went to the mall to my PO box and there was my order from Barnes & Noble, Eisenstein The Sound Years Ivan The Terrible Parts 1 & 2, Alexander Nevsky. I know what I am doing today.

Glad it finaly got here, I know it's a DVD but I think the PQ will still be very sweet.

Yeah, and I just ordered the Art House Essential volumes 1 & 2 online, for $45 each.

So, that brings it to 23 films for about $215...or $9.35/each!

I saw one of those at B&N, are they missing the extras that the regular Criterions have?
