Took advantage of this great offer. And added STARZ for another 99 cents a month for 6 months.

its a bit of a wash really. If you watch a show a month then you will watch around an hour of commercials with you valuing your time at around 10 to 15 dollars an hour. If you watch 2 shows a month then you value your time at around 5 to 8 dollars an hour. The value band for the hulu with ads is rather small unless its basically your kids who are paying for the service by watching ads.

personally I have hulu with ads though Verizon but i only really watch hulu when I'm donating blood as its ad free. most shows just aren't worth putting up with commercials these days.

Yeah, I tried going with an ad-free plan earlier this year (Peacock) and it was an ordeal. I could not justify the savings, with the cost of my time. It didn't work out for me, so I generally try to go with a full year upfront in an ad-free tier whenever possible.

The only services I use that have ads that are unavoidable are FreeVee and Tubi. The rub being that those services are free.

This won't register but I have to say it,

The streaming version of movies are small files optimized for watching over Wifi on mobile devices.
Having the ability to transfer 100Mbs doesn't matter when the source is 5.5Mbs.

Walk on a 6 lane highway and you won't get there faster.Sometimes you have to consider the weak link in a chain if you want to think about something realistically.

You have a nice TV, it's a shame it won't host better source material. Thank goodness better media is still an option for those who want it.

Both absolutely true.

Retired means most of your time is your own but it doesn't mean you can't do something useful with it. Value your own time and you will relate better to others.

I will pay for your Hulu next year if you stop posting/trolling here at Blu Ray dot com.

While I agree with the overall point of lesser quality designed for the masses, file sizes for mobile devices, including laptops and tablets are often smaller than what you stated. Netflix and the like have many different versions of a stream and mobile devices are designated their own stream depending on the equipment and any restrictions that may be in place (DRM for Google Chrome devices means streams are often a max of 720p at around 1 Mbps). Streaming is optimised for a smart tv with the appropriate bit rate and specifications.
The only service that I know of that does things they way you suggested is C4 over here. Looks fine on a laptop, but total ass on a smart tv.

The rest have many streams for a given situation, although obviously I do agree that the bit rates are usually low.

I have had to deal with some very slow learners in my time but don't recall ever dealing with a no-learner such as that poster. It is really , makes me wonder why I have not communicated just a tiny bit of technical information to him.

Yes, every title is segmented and encoded at various bit rates and that is how adaptive streaming works. On some Netflix titles I have observed as many as 8 different bit rates. Stacey Spears said when he was at Microsoft they used the term layers.

Wendell,

I just read your previous post about non DRM downloads never going to happen.

It would be swell if legit UHD downloads existed from iTunes even if they had DRM. I would rather Download it before hosting it.

Imagine an eventual disc player that unlocked high quality streaming versions. This is safer for the owners of the IP.

And, it sort of exists in the case of PS5 games. The disc is kind of the "code" or having the disc gives you access to the game which is then downloaded and played from the internal hard drive. You still need the disc to play.

Two issues
1)A maximum wage law would never pass even if it is a direct democracy.
let me put it this way , what do you think will happen if the CEO says to employees "if this law passes and I can only make 100x what you make I will fire you and hire people in a different country to do the job?" (or even if it crosses the mind of the people working at the company.

2) A maximum wage law would be useless

a) let's say it passes, let's say it is an industry like mining or restaurants where employees need to be on the spot so they can't artificially raise what the CEO can make based on removing cheap labour. Right now plenty of companies have fake headquarters in other countries for the sake of skimming on the taxes they pay. What o you think if the CEO of of one of the companies that moved the headquarters to Cayman islands, goes "Hay Cayman we now have a small office there with our fake headquarters would you allow me to imigrate there so this new law won't negatively affect my income?

b) you are assuming wage is important. It is to the normal person, but the top brass of large companies. For example, Steve jobs in 1997 decided he will work for 1$ a year (not picking on him but it makes a great example). But then you have share options, bonuses, benefits...... that means that they don't have t live on their official wage.

that is not the worst part of it. From around the mid 1700 to beginning of 1800 is what is known as the industrial revolution. When as a species we started using fossil fuels to run machines and started disrupting the normal carbon cycle by releasing a lot of carbon that was stored in the earth.

For example (a bit different story)

https://adoptandshop.org/the-english...tema%20Naturae.

Quote:
he peppered moth is one of the most famous examples of industrial melanism, a phenomenon where the frequency of dark-colored individuals in a species increases in areas with high levels of industrial pollution. The English peppered moth was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. The moth is typically a light gray color with black speckles, but the frequency of dark-colored individuals increased in areas with high levels of industrial pollution during the Industrial Revolution. This change was first noticed in 1848, and by 1895, the dark form was the dominant form in Manchester and other heavily industrialized areas of England.

Now this is due to the smoke coming from burning coal but that same burning coal also released CO2. It might not have been that perceptible to humans, but before the darker moths where easier to se and so hunted more by animals that eating them, but because the smoke made the sky grayer the darker moths became harder to see and the paler ones easier and so hunted more.

This is not an issue that started with the last Huracan in Florida, but one that started in the 1700's and was just getting worst since than.

It has nothing to do with elitism or looking down on others.

I don't feel I need to pretend that my house is a castle or my car is a luxury sports car and I don't begrudge anyone that splurges on those things or anyone that enjoys what it brings them.

For some reason it bugs you that I am looking for better audio and video.

I say Streaming is very Subjective and Dependent on your Equipment and Setup. With a High End Display, Fiber, and Ethernet, over Low End Equipment using a Disc Player!

If someone feels the need to have a house with 100 bedrooms and big ball room and banquet hall or not that is subjective, if some feels the need to have a car that can go 0-60 in under 3 seconds that is subjective, that my house does not have all those rooms and my car can't do that those are facts. and as for the rest it does not make any sense. I can't take my DVD and make it show all the info that is in the UHD BD because the info was never there to begin with. Same with streaming if due to compression that info was lost no matter how grate and magical my equipment is it can't add that info back in.

Most PS5 games don't require a download. There are patches available for the vast majority of games but they are usually optional.

Most games are fully contained on the disc but all of them must be installed to the solid state drive before they can be played.

I do think what would get more to stream, and what would get the revenues up, is going back to "Netflix." What I am referring to is a time when one or two services controlled the entire streaming industry. Everything was available there and the prices were reasonable.

it launched cheap and a lot of content because they needed to convince people to pay that monthly subscription. they needed to get people hooked. But at some point in time all companies need to think about being profitable.
