I came of age between 1983 and 1999, so Star Wars means very little to me.

The 1990s were the Star Wars Renaissance, 93 to 99 in particular, but it went strongly into the 00s. New editions, new merch out the wazoo, video games etc. Lucas got the adults and the kiddos back aboard his hype train and pushed it to ludicrous speed.

I'm curious how you were around the peak ages then but missed it.

The toy sales fell off hard after 2002 unless you were into vehicles...I couldn't stand Hasbros quality of the era. They figures got smaller with less articulation.

Star Wars (New Hope), Revenge of the Sith, and The Last Jedi are my three favorite Star Wars movies.

If they had trimmed about 40 minutes off of Phantom Menace it would have been a strong contender for my favorite of the series.
Personally, I never liked the PT, the first movie is unwatchable after Jar Jar shows up and the only legitimate good bits of the movie are the Pod race and the fight between Darth Maul and Obi Wan/Quigon Jin. But I can queue those up on YouTube if I ever want to watch those bits again.

AotC had legitimately more going for it and is the closest it comes to being an actual SW movie. And it has the bonus of Natalie Portman looking incredible. But it fails in so many ways.

And the last one starts off great until they land the wreck of the ship on the runway, as Obi-Wan says "Another happy landing" so ends anything good about the film and is 2-hour winge fest form a petulant child and the worst hammed up acting from Ian McDiarmid with the most hideous make-up.

There may be a resurgence of love for Hayden Christensen, but his acting stank up 2 and 3 horribly and is still a bad performance today as it was when the film was released. There's no "reassessing" his acting. It was always has been bad from the moment I saw him back in the 2000's

The PT is worthless garbage, just as bad at the Sequel Trilogy.

Star Wars is literally just the OT and Rouge One for me.

I think his D+ appearances are evidence that Christensen is a good actor.

Lack of a cohesive or coherent direction for his character's emotional journey and Lucas second third and fourth guessing his motivations and the plot supporting it clearly hampered Hayden's overall performance. McGregor seemed to have got through it by just taking his Guinness impersonation right up the middle of the road, and smashing the climax on the lava flow, as Christensen does too. But Hayden was given a bit of a raw deal in creating Anakin and Vader. I think an actor with a more wilful personality might have prevailed better. Even if that meant clashing with Lucas. Hayden seems to have relied a bit too much on George to direct him at that time. Which is understandable.

Ewan has his share of daytime soap opera moments too. But that is a also a reflection Lucas's making it up on the fly method of trying to resolve the plot of the PT. It's almost as if McGregor can't quite believe it's going to be in the movie when he delivers that "Killing younglings..." line.

I do think thats the aspect that tends to get ignored about SW, it of course got a hell of a lot of hype and merchandising during the run of the films and a year or two after. but really beyond that I think it shifted towards something more cultish.

A lot of the core of the SW fanbase I'd argue is not those who grew up watching it at the cinema, its those who grew up watching it on VHS and cable in the late 80's and early 90's, people who would now be in their mid 30's to mid 40's.

When Evil Lurks is the best horror of 2023. Absolutely brutal film ( the dog scene, jesus) and a nice mashup of posession/zombie/body horror movies. Its a shame it hasn't been more widely seen.

Any screen writer who puts "I'll see you in hell" in a script should have their SAG card ripped into tiny pieces and then banned from ever writing again.

Directors who allow it in their film should also be punished severely.

My older friends who grew up with 2001 & The Planet of The Apes as the Sci-Fi of their era, have stated that SW wasn't really their cup of tea.

I understand their stance.

I can also understand if you weren't around for the '77 hoopla either.

First Class is the only X-Men movie I truly enjoy and it doesn't have Wolverine in it (I can ignore a cameo).

As a teen I was so looking forward to Star Wars when it first came out but it disappointed me and subsequent viewings have not changed my opinion much. I think it is because I view it more as a fantasy than sci-fi and I prefer my sci-fi harder.
