Question about turntable sound from a receiver

I have a question regarding turntable sound from a receiver. I currently have Onkyo TX-NR575 receiver and a Denon DP-300F turntable. The turntable is 12 years old and the receiver is 6 years old. I currently have to have the sound cranked at 45-50 in order to hear the music. Is there anything I can do to make the sound better and at lower volume? It hasn't really bothered me that much, but now that I've got the green marble vinyl of R.E.M.'s UP, I would like to work on this. I know this may be a stupid question, but you do you have the pre-amp on the record player turned off?
