What proof is there, exactly, that this label is holding this movie "hostage"?

For people like me who don't have a region-free player, this disc is the only option. It's much better than nothing. Heck, the old disc (now disc 2) has four stars on this site.

This is better than nothing. It's probably a perfectly solid release. Yeah, I wish it was a Criterion... but at the same time, I can't afford for every movie to be a $45 boutique UHD release.

So... seriously, only one other person ordered this and they are considering cancelling it? Lol. Seems like a sad fate for such an important piece of cinema.

I think it’s a more general sense of “missed opportunity” in regards to this release. Raro & Eagle Italy released a UHD, which has a good video encode but flaws all around it. The region B lock is the cherry on top. Kino in particular could have made an effort to release a definitive UHD in the US just like Eagle advocated for one in Italy. People all over the world would have imported this release.

We don’t know what’s going on in the UK at the moment, so Region A-only viewers in need of English subtitles are stuck with the Blu-ray set. This is truly sad as the new restoration looks beautiful and restores the colors according to a timed print which Bertolucci and Storaro made in 2009 if I remember correctly.

My copy came in from Amazon earlier today and decided to open it after the Robert Harris review on Home Theater Forum. At first glance through a few scenes, the new disc looks quite spectacular. I'd argue this is a substantial upgrade, not only in terms of the color timing but also the quality of the print and encode. The movie looks much more like a film now compared to the previous releases. I'm looking forward to viewing the entire disc and I hope the Raro encode holds up.

That's good to hear! I had a feeling this release was going to be solid.

Disappointed, though, that my Diabolik order still hasn't shipped, nearly a week after release day.

I'm tempted to pick up the Italian release, although would love an Arrow UHD. What are the flaws?

Check this thread for all the info in one place: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...2&postcount=13

As of a few weeks ago, Amazon.it are still not shipping the corrected version, so beware of getting the first version if you buy now. Hopefully Arrow has something in the works.

It’s not actually worth buying the Italian 4K a second time to get the corrected version is it?

It's wild that we're getting lavish 4K releases of stuff like Killer Condom (1996), and yet very little - at least thus far - from European masters; like Visconti, Fellini, Antonioni, Pasolini, Haneke, Rossellini... Hopefully we'll get 4Ks from these greats eventually! I love horror, like most folks on here. But, man alive, the lacunae of great works on the 4K format, from major European directors, does rather speak volumes as to where the market is at for many fans. I'm not knocking horror, but I want more of the other quality stuff too; I Want It All, as Freddie sang

Not a good idea to compare VS and their subscription model to the works of the European directors. They had countless sales/discounts to unload some of their slow selling titles.

Just because they released Killer Condom is no guarantee it'll be a big seller or that a film by one of the directors you mentioned would sell as much as that or some of their more popular releases.

No, not really to be honest. M A said that the lossless audio track doesn't have much information that isn't in the lossy track. See the other thread for more info.

Ok. As long as there isn’t a night and day difference in terms of audio syncing in the opening scene between v1 and v2 I won’t lose sleep over it. I seem to remember the audio being slightly out of sync in the opening scene on earlier releases of the film, as well. I specifically remember it being noticeable when he opens and digs into his shaving kit.

That said, if Arrow released a FiM-encoded UHD I’d be tempted to double dip.

On a different note, I must say I’m surprised Kino have yet to release a single non-English language film on UHD.

Re. Kino: Things could change now with their cheaper authoring house and Tarzi being more open to other types of films he wouldn't have considered earlier. He didn't specifically say other countries but why not.

I don't think I've ever heard of a Bluray set including both a new restoration and a previous one. I know it's common with UHD to include an old Bluray, though.

I've stopped using this site's purchase links to Amazon, if Svet Atanasov is reviewing the disc. He either needs to get his set-up ISF-calibrated, or stop reviewing.

Typical Svet yapping about the colour being wrong without offering a shred of evidence to support his assertions. The site should state clearly that his reviews are entirely his own opinion because it's borderline misinformation at this point.
