Well, maybe that's a little unfair as I'd say Gangs of New York was carried by DD-L. I wonder if his 2002-2013 films were more accessible as, off-hand, I know they were raunchy and violent but I don't recall them being as "gross-out" as his prior films.
What is 'a hit'?

Silence is good. The Irishman is good.

Money. That’s how people on these boards determine if a movie is “good or not”. If it makes money. Everyone has become accountants for the studios.

How to Judge a movie.

A movie I like.
High Critic Score, High Audience Score, and makes money.

"I knew it, these critics and the audience know what a good movie is"

A movie I do not like.
High Critic Score, High Audience Score, and makes money.

"What do they know, this movie is going to end cinema for ever. No one should listen to any of them."

A movie I like.

Low Critic score, low audience score, makes no money.

"Never listen to these people this is a masterpiece. It will be a cult classic one day"

A movie I do not like.

Low Critic score, low audience score, makes no money.

"They are right on the money this movie is terrible. Downfall of everything."

I've never paid attention to ratings. I only care about discussion points.

I couldn't even tell you the RT or letterboxd score of my favorite movies.

To be fair, the guy wasn't talking about quality but cultural reach.

But that's a dumb metric to measure films. Not only is it impossible to actually measure, but it's removed from the actual film itself. You're no longer talking about the movie but how many people know about the movie.

If Chris Stuckmann, Jeremy Jahns and RLM love a movie, I do too. If they hate it, I loathe it.

Aggregate scores are useless for critical reasons if you are trying to determine a movies likelihood of entertaining you. Best to look up critiques after you see movies and learn which critics you agree with for future reference. Audience scores are particularly useless because most people are predisposed to liking a movie they paid to see.
It's like polls here All but few are majority 4 star movies. Useless.

John Williams' scores for the Star Wars sequels were forgettable. Abrams and Johnson didn't know how to collaborate with him the way Lucas did.

Fight Club was a huge step backwards after Seven for Fincher.

I’ve read enough from that user to ignore a lot of what they say. So that was on me. I’ve just seen the deluge of people reporting how much money a movie lost and just find it so boring that people would focus on the money and I let that cloud my reading.

It ends up being a proxy argument for quality.

"A movie can't be good if no one has heard of it, and a movie has to be good if everyone's heard of it."*

*only applicable to movies the person either does not or does like, respectively

It's a dodge to avoid actually talking about the movie itself for whatever reason. I find discussion of the films themselves far more interesting.

Like, for instance, the film directors who made the transition to sound best were the youngest generation at the time, like Howard Hawks and Frank Capra. People with more experience had serious trouble making the transition because they had more to unlearn like Ford and Hitchcock.

The one that breaks the rule is Ernst Lubitsch who had been making movies since 1915 or so and his first sound, The Love Parade, is a technical marvel.

The Empire Strikes Back, is my least favourite of the original trilogy. (that doesn't mean I dislike it)
