I'm not against digital and I agree it can look excellent. I don't have a preference really, just depends on the content I guess. Clean digital look suits well for upbeat comedies, musical or romance (which Titanic is one). It can also be manipulated and finished to not look too digital for more serious films that need to look gritty, or at least look like film.

With Titanic, it's just the opposite. It was shot on film and it's clear Jim wants to make it look like it was shot on digital cameras. And he actually succeeded, without losing the details where I can even see things I didn't notice before. Some tiny evidence of smearing but overall it's very impressive. Again it's clean, bright, vivid, I just didn't care for it anymore after the first act.

While for example Big Fish that I watched again more recently, I appreciate the cinematography all the way until the end even while the story is more engaging to me.

All this said, Titanic on this 4K disc does look amazing I think everyone who likes the film should get it.

To be clear, I'm not saying I believe this will happen. I don't.
I'd certainly be saving a lot more money because at that point I would honestly stop buying new releases, unless some smaller labels bucked the trend and refused to jump in on it. Much of what I do buy honestly is stuff from the smaller labels.

Ultimately, I don't think Cameron would be able to create such trend anytime soon, if ever. I honestly wouldn't be surprising if restoring Titanic this way was actually harder than restoring it the traditional way. It can't have been easy to hit the balance between making it look almost like a digitally shot movie, while not making artifacts stand out too much.

4k UHF sounds intriguing. I grew up watching UHF channels in the 80's.

Standard 4K shipped by Amazon. Delivery scheduled for release day, Tu 12/5.

I cancelled the Collector's Edition. Not enough content to justify that price. For all the pricing complaints about Arrow and VS collector's sets, they are half the price of this or less.

Especially from a mono speaker on the TV!

I don't like how the discs are in the cardboard sleeve in the Collector's Edition and it's too much for what you get.

I still remember the exhilaration of my dad telling us that the antenna was high enough and included a UHF portion which would bring in WZTV Fox 17 out of Nashville! That meant we finally had the good cartoons, like my uppity cousin next door!

UHF OTA is the way I saw my first HD via some strange looking piece of square metal that I put outside my window hooked up to my Sony widescreen xbr 1 CRT tv....
Wish I could get reception where I live now... there's lots of good stuff OTA

I just got the Collector's Edition but cannot find the Digital Code. Does anyone with the CE have the same issue?

There are many levels of this. All restorations are revisionist to some extent. I mean, restoring from the OCN is already revisionism. Perfectly aligning three-strip Technicolor is revisionism. Removing diffusion is revisionism. And you can't grade the picture in movies for home releases in the exact same way than an actual theater, it just doesn't work.

Ultimately, in the most rigorous sense of word, digital restorations are not actually restorations. Restorations would be actually photochemically fixing the OCN itself and the answer prints. Just like paintings.

So…how is it that the Apple digital copy of this in 4K looks just about right (in the brightness department) vs the disc which, as I said yesterday, looked too bright?

Worked for me on iTunes to upgrade HD to 4K. I assume it would work just fine on Vudu as well.
