I think there are issues w/ some movies when it comes to dnr/grain. But, lately it seems like every single release is getting picked apart and it's just annoying. Because, it doesn't apply to a good majority of the titles in question.

It's actually a correct thing to do. It engages the fight or fight instinct and assists in reviving an unconscious person. Some conscious people too.

Her being called that name is a story shortcut. Everyone calls her that so you know she's stepped on toes wherever she's gone without having to have it down. You also come to realize it's just a defense mechanism that's stripped away as she grows due to the events happening to and around her.

A bit controlling to just want people to post positive content isn’t it? Sometimes reality isn’t always positive. As to people that are negative for the sake of being negative, you just can’t control what people will do or say. That’s the drawback of being able to express one’s opinion or thoughts. But id much rather deal with that than having limitations on how you can express yourself, be it positive or negative.

Squeamish Brian to the max!
The weirder thing is that it's usually Steves or Daves that are released due to squeamishness. Rarely is it a Brian.

That's what I thought, I've never happened across a squeamish Brian before.

So while as any person into pop culture, I know a good deal about this film - but I honestly don't believe I've ever sat down and watched it beginning to end, even back in the day.

Is there a consensus on which version is considered superior?

I don't often say this, but special edition (the longer one!) all the way.

Never liked those lines either, even since it was first released in theaters.

The purpose of those lines are two/three/fold.

On one level it is supposed to be reflective of the comportment of some 'roughnecks'.

Concurrently, it is all to reinforce the animosity that the whole crew feel in regards to Lindsey's personality and allegiance to Bud.

This is part of Lindsey's character arc, in that she starts from being a self-imposed outsider to ultimately being accepted by the remaining crew towards the latter part of the film after all her actions that earn their respect.

James Cameron: “I don’t like the textural quality of celluloid”

For a smart guy, he can sound really dumb sometimes!

Thanks! I was kind of assuming that, but actually got worried when I saw Cameron say it was the preferred version - I still have George Lucas trauma so I have trust issues.

I really liked the theatrical cut, which I saw about a dozen times.
Then, one day, I saw the VHS box set release of the widescreen version - extended cut. I saved my pennies for weeks (and begged a little for some ca$h) and bought it.

I loved the special edition. It really changes a lot of the themes from the theatrical cut, while enhanced the storytelling to new levels. I rarely say things like this about extended cuts. I usually really enjoy seeing extra stuff, and I sometimes like/wish a few moments or scenes would be left in (T2 a good example), but I usually think the theatrical version of movies is serviceable. An extended cut rarely changes my opinion of the movie in a substantial way.

The longer cut of The Abyss gave me a squealing Brian, if that helps.

There is a stark difference between The Abyss Special Edition and GL's Special Augmented Editions for the SW OT.

The Special Edition for The Abyss really should be referred to as The Original Edition since that was the initial intended cut, but was shortened before all the VFX for the "SE" footage were to be completed.

I think the consensus is the Special Edition.

Personally, though, I've gone back and forth over the years. The SE does feel more complete, but the original theatrical cut was pretty carefully edited by Cameron himself, so it still works.

Honestly, after watching the SE again last night (first time in a while that I've seen it all the way through), I feel like there are a few spots that sort of "overexplain" things. An ideal cut probably would have been somewhere in between the two existing ones.

I prefer the 4:3 presentation because it really adds to the feelings of claustrophobia.

No. Not really.
