This is very true. very easy watch in parts but as a whole it's a bit of a slog. Scenes are amazing. Even the 2nd half of the movie. But it loses me when I try to watch the whole thing

I think probably what people are expecting is something I bit more like Exorcist 3 were the possession is played up as genuinely scary more but in the original I think the point is moreso that characters are "ready" for that, having an antagonist worthy of their suffering so to speak were as Pazuzu is more a nasty little delinquent who spits and swears undermining their suffering.

Really the recent film was always doomed to failure for me because it was obviously not going to be operating at anything close to the same level as the original. Thats really the downfall of modern mainstream horror for me, its reduced itself it very rarely being more than cheap slashers/horrors, modern "horror auteurs"(outside of the arthouse scene anyway) are just not directors close to Friedkin, Kubrick, Scott, etc

Not to be too "In my day", but to me Nicholson's take on Napier/Joker makes the most sense and still gets away with the comic element. Even if it doesn't nail it consistently.

i.e. Jack Napier is fairly inscrutable. Not funny. Or at least doesn't betray a big sense of humour. But after what happens to him, he's forced to appear as if he's adopted a sense of humour about it. A grotesque, obscene sense of humour to try and convince himself and others that his appearance is a choice. Not an accident. But that means that everyone is constantly subject to his whims and his idea of fun. Which is nobody else's.

I hate the idea of the Joker simply having a contempt for society which excuses or explains his behaviour. Or just reveling in his madness or impressing everyone with his intellect. I'm so grateful that Nicholson's Joker never has a speech justifying what he's doing because he's smarter than everyone else. (Even if he is).

But I'm not a huge Batman/Joker fan anyway so what do I know?

Absolutely agree. If anyone goes into the Exorcist for the first time expecting traditional scares, they'll be underwhelmed. Nasty little delinquent.... I like that, LOL.

The recent film has been mostly viewed as a total flop. Like really bad. Ellen Burstyn is probably embarrassed to have her name attached but the check still cashed. . There have been numerous Exorcism-based films since the first one and outside of a few decent efforts they have been mostly terrible. The genre feels beaten to death as it is. And, this new film attached itself to a bonafide classic which requires the film makers to bring their A-game to even have a chance. They brought their F game, sadly.

Godzilla Minus One was merely okay.

I did like more about the film than I didn't, and I am super appreciative that I was able to see a subtitled Japanese monster movie on the big screen in the USA, but the gushing waves of orgasmic fervor it's getting all over the internet strike me as being way over the top.

And - this is what scares me about going to see it next week. Its been pimped as the best movie ever in the world ever. So, ehhh.... been told that before. I will try to temper the expectations but they are high.

I'm not worried. I've been told about PLENTY of movies that were awesome and I had to see them, but I ended up not liking them. I plan on seeing it. But I wouldn't be surprised and won't be disappointed if I don't like it. Not liking a movie has been par for me for the past (at least) five years. I'm surprised every time I like a movie I see from now on. With the exception of John Wick 3 & 4 during the past five years.

The rat in the final scene in case you didn’t get theme of the movie. That has to be the most on the nose thing I have ever seen. They may have well have paused the movie, looked at the camera and said ‘well, do you get it, did you get what we were going for?’.

If you have only seen the movie The Shining, Jack Nicholson given an excellent performance. However, if you have read the book I think that is horrible casting.

Unpopular opinion, I prefer Dr Sleep to The Shining. It’s closer to the book and I will always appreciate a movie that stay true to the source material over a movie that doesn’t.

I just watched Spider-Man across the spider verse. 2/3 of the film is just set up after set up, and whole time I’m wondering what the hell this movie about? and trying to ignore the plotholes. 15 minutes before it ends I’m like “just end already”. Then it ends on a cliffhanger...

Get that f out of here with that shit.

First 20 minutes setting up Gwen. Then another setting up Miles. It keeps going on like that.

The intro for Gwen is an introduction to the character in case you didn't watch the first movie. Same for Miles. I don't see these as problems.

If you mean the Canon Events, then you missed the obvious because the whole point is that they don't make really make sense.

If anything, they're just something Miguel pushes to deal with the trauma of being responsible for the death of an entire universe and to make sure anything like that never happens again. To an unhealthy extreme.

Among the great film composers, I think it's sad that Bruce Broughton and Randy Edelman are rarely if ever are part of the conversation. Broughton imo could stand toe to toe with Williams and Silvestre. Edelman's score for Dragon alone makes him tops. It's even more of bummer that you don't see these guys still working high profile films anymore. John Williams is still composing in his 90's for crying out loud.

There's such a severe lack of great movie scores that really bring the heart and soul of cinema.
