I have a feeling this movie will be more appreciated years from now. Valerian was similar, a great looking, yet under performing sci-fi flick that I believe will eventually reach cult film status.

Got mine today and sampled it. Thought this was supposed to look good? Could not find a scene worth the HDR. I'm guessing it's purely the digital grain that got some folks worked up. Will watch it in full later to see if it at least holds up in proper viewing.

This was the first 4K disc I've ever viewed and I found it to be exceptional. The image was so detailed and textured I felt like I could actually reach out and grab it. Also had some lights going on yo compliment the mood and it worked beautifully.

I found the subtitles with this HDR10 presentation exceptionally bright, to the point where it bothered me so much that I switched to the iTunes copy on an AppleTV box. That gave me Dolby Vision, and customizable subtitle styles. The subtitles were as bright as the Oppo info display, at full 100% brightness (i.e. 1000 nits), very glaring. Other UHD discs have their subtitles coded at a lower brightness level, e.g. Barbie was HDR10, too, and didn't have this issue (compare to the Oppo info display, which is also at 100%).
I'm a staunch supported of physical media, but I find myself watching most of my content via streaming, because of such conveniences. I'm sad that Oppo stopped making players, by now they would probably have come up with a model that has a non-IR based remote that can control the audio volume via CEC, dimmable HDR subtitles / info display (in addition to their unique and much appreciated subtitle shift), and proper support of 21:9 screens with Dolby Vision content (right now, they disable the stretch-scaling I need for my anamorphic lens, and I have to disable DV when using the projector) Sorry for the rant... Missed the theatrical screenings but pre-ordered the UHD, which I viewed weeks ago but just found the time to add my thoughts post-Christmas crunch.
While I've been a fan of Edwards work since Monsters, and of the opinion that both Godzilla and Rogue One are among my favorites from the respective franchises, as a director his films exhibit a wide swing from strengths to weaknesses. The Creator is no different. Love the look, intriguing premise, bits are brilliant, fails to nail the landing. While I didn't take issue with the AI angle and Nam allegory as a bit nonsensical, the third act felt as if someone else was directing the film, and not for the better. For me, a very worthwhile watch, but just not the execution in the final act and related ending. All in all, I was left a bit wanting more than the film ultimately had to offer, but especially because many aspects of the film were great. When The Creator is at its best, it stands with the very best from anyone, including Ridley Scott, the patron saint of visual storytelling first and figure out the rest as we go along wild card way of filmmaking. Edwards is super talented, but he either needs to find a better team around him to deliver on his potential, or ignore whatever poor advice he's getting. I say that because Monsters is the one film where I'm assuming he had full control, and that film remains his best. It's ridiculous that this guy delivered the best aesthetic of every Star Wars and Godzilla prequel/sequel ever released, obviously gets the gestalt of a franchise, combined with delivering films at half the budget of far more expensive yet inferior entries, and nevertheless he's on the sidelines with years between films. |

In my quote above, I left the bit about the ending/third-act outside of spoiler tags because I particularly agree with this. Fascinating, right? Dude's so talented, but the Rogue One ending had to be taken away from him in order to knock it into shape, and now The Creator fumbles the ball at the 10th yard line. I agree that it became a completely different movie. Funny enough, when I first read your comment/review, I had to wrack my brain to remember what HAPPENED in the third act; I genuinely couldn't remember, even though I just watched it like five days ago! Something akin to cognitive dissonance must have blocked it from sinking in, lol. Aesthetically this dude is THERE; a visual artist almost second to none currently working, in my book -- and that's high praise from someone who generally dislikes the way current movies look. But wow, this just left me wanting. |

I do enjoy Edwards' films in general, but I feel like Godzilla, Rogue One, and The Creator all really lack an additional layer of sophistication/profundity that could elevate his work on par with some of the greatest directors. I actually enjoyed The Creator and appreciated its originality, didn't even mind the moral ambiguity all that much, however, I think his overall message was a very difficult emotional sell that more than anything just left me high and dry.
I see this film gets a lot of praise for its visuals, however, I imagine if this was something created by Christopher Nolan the visuals would be far greater. I'm really not crazy about the digital look on the consumer grade camera FX3 and the color work comes off as overly processed IMO. I think the film wanted to be an epic but didn't quite have the $$ for it and most likely due to the unconventional narrative. Ultimately I think it's a fine film but left me wanting much more out of it all around. |

The Creator was released on the 4K Blu-ray format on 12-12-2023. I have not seen this movie yet, however a family member recently purchased the movie and the slipcase arrived with a small tear in it and the 4K Blu-ray plastic jacket was damaged with some plastic broken off the bottom of the case and on the hinge plastic broken. But the optical discs appear in perfect condition with no scratches, and instead of one of my family members exchanging the movie, I most likely will instead give them a blank 4K Blu-ray replacement case. Over a few decades I have stocked blank replacement cases for DVD, 2K Blu-ray, and lately 4K Blu-ray empty cases in different sizes and shapes. This way when a case arrives damaged one does not have to exchange the movie which is a time involving process, but instead one tosses the broken case away and replaces the case with the exact same brand and model. The small tear in the slipcover was repaired with some clear small tape inserted inside the slipcover so it does not make the tear worse.
Now maybe in the near future I might actually watch the movie. |

Inconsistent, boring and poorly scripted story full of clichés and unlikeable characters, filled with plot holes too big to ignore. Action set pieces were pretty lame as well. Sure, it looks nice and expensive. If that's all you need, go for it.
