Yeah kudos for trying something different, it worked for some people and not for others. Works can be polarizing, my favourite director is quite polarizing.

I think that the MCU worked best when there was this sort of variation. Thor the Dark World got terrible reviews when it first came out, but, when revisiting the whole of the MCU, it is actually interesting and different.

Perhaps, under Disney, they have tried too hard to make everyone happy, and have made nobody happy as a result.

Another example of corporate big wigs clearly trying to check boxes before they make sure they have a quality product first.

I know it’s true in some cases, but it’s a MASSIVE generalization to say Iron Man 3 is only disliked “by the few Mandarin fanboys that can't stand that the movie wasn't what they wanted”.

I couldn’t care less about comic accuracy and wasn’t a fan of the Mandarin character beforehand. I disliked how the film used the character because Ben Kingsley was absolutely crushing it in the role and he actually felt like a legitimate threat (which was rare in the MCU) despite playing a terrorist villain trope, and then they turned it into a joke and replaced him with a villain who was just as much of cliche and less threatening. And I don’t find the Slattery character funny and couldn’t believe they brought him back in Shang-Chi which added so much unnecessary ‘comedy’ to the second half of that film when it should’ve gotten more serious.

And Rebecca Hall was completely wasted in that film and ended up being discarded like trash. There’s several other reasons I disliked the film, but I haven’t seen it in awhile to fully dissect.

I also think Tony Stark/Iron Man’s character arc is so inconsistent throughout the MCU despite being the central figure and shows that the MCU isn’t this well plotted/connected thing like people suggest. At the end of Iron Man 3 he gives up his toys to be with Pepper, and then the very next time we see him in Ultron he’s already back to the same old as if Iron Man 3 never happened and has had a falling out with Pepper.

EDIT: Forgot to mention I was digging the Lethal Weapon vibes they were going for during the climax at first, but then it got absurd with the deus ex machina of all the Iron Man suits as well as the Pepper Potts death fake out.

I don't like Tarantino movies.

I tried watching Jackie Brown today but could only make it half-way through.

The way his characters speak annoy me. Also, since I was told about his alleged foot fetish I can't unsee it now - namely this film, and From Dusk Till Dawn the other night. Takes me right out of the film.

Tarantino's movies are filled with tons of unnecessary dialogue. The diner scene in "Death Proof" is the most unnecessary scene ever put on celluloid.

He seems to always have an over long talking scene around food. Also in Hateful Eight, Pulp Fiction, and Inglorious Bastards.

Doesn’t Reservoir Dogs start with a diner talk scene?

I do feel post that after End Game or perhaps Spidey 2 and Black Widow they have started to become a bit more formulaic.

it seems like everything has to be BIG these days, granted Marvel always tended to have a big 20 min action scene at the end of most films but it seems like all the films these days end up being massive in scale which doesnt leave much room for originality and character(the cornerstone of the MCU's appeal IMHO).

The best recent stuff for me has mostly been on Disney+ because its not been following that formula nearly as much and just naturally has more time to play with.

Yeah, you make good points here. There was a lot to dislike with IM3. The Pepper stuff was just brutal. She became the hero…or whatever. The fake death sucked too. Somehow, Pepper returned. . I don’t hate the movie like some folks but it’s the weakest of the three, easily.

And don’t get me started on how Shang Chi ruined itself with that stupid character being jammed in there. Did Kingsley have some contractual thing where he had to be in that movie? Ugh. Totally agree that Shang Chi needed to stay focused and get more serious and that character wrecked that idea. I still like Shang Chi but it could have been great and instead is only decent, at best.

I can’t stand the guy. His movies are juvenile crap. Same old shtick every time. Same characters, same bad dialog, same revenge themes, same blah blah blah. He should be directing deodorant commercials at best and he’d probably screw that up.

The only great thing about any Tarantino movie is the dialogue. Jackie Brown is his best film.
