I will import this at some point, but it's still disappointing for a title people have wanted for for over a decade and a half at this point being denied a local release.

Decade and a half? The DVDs were released in 2000\2001, it's two decades and counting. Not that that soothes the pain any, if anything that just makes it worse

There are far worse things that appeared on the screen. I do have an issue with an animal being killed strictly for the film but the animal wasn’t killed here.
The rat wasn't killed but it certainly went through distress and thought it was going to die as it didn't understand what was happening. If the equivalent happened to us we'd never forget the experience and it would be considered torture. And yes, I understand rat traps, etc., but it's clear seeing an animal in actual distress that didn't need to be rubs the censors the wrong way.

Yes, but what I meant was that we've been waiting for a high definition release pretty much since the inception of the Blu-Ray format, which isn't quite two decades old yet (although it is scarily close. I mean my sister hadn't even been born when the first Blu-Ray came out )

I bet the BBFC use mouse and rat traps in their building. Maybe they will cancel themselves and save Britain from their mollycoddling.
In the BBFC's defense, it's not their decision to make - it's a government law that was enacted in 1937 that dictates what can and can't be shown with respect to harm to animals in films, and it's the [non-governmental] BBFC who are tasked with ensuring compliance, so in many cases it's simply a "CYA" thing when they order that scenes be removed that violate that law.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) ran into some controversy in England upon release over concerns it was too frightening for children, which led Walt to defend the film in the British press, stating, "Snow White is not a children's film. We don't make movies for children." He meant they made films for everybody, not a single demo the way we think about such things today.

Hey, the good people of England have their ways, if they want to relax their laws, they can. You'd probably see mass riots in America if people had to pay a yearly license fee for operating a television. You gotta figure in the information age and with VPNs the genie is out of the afternoon teapot.

I just simply can't fathom essentially having a government censorship board for movies. Ppl can play the empathy and morality card all they want, my mind is made up. The MPAA is just as bad in their own way tho.

I think information technology made film ratings boards moot, but now we have content algorithms doing the dirty work.

Oh, you could have it but you'd have to kick the big "M" to the curb first.

I've heard so many great things about this movie that I am excited to give it a shot when this disc comes out next year.

We don’t even need that. People can just Google movies and decide if it’s for them/their families, read the IMDB parents guide or something.

Studios can make their own content descriptors. Ratings boards (government stipulated or not) can take a walk tbh.

Censorship will always be an issue wherever you are. The Devils is another one which is studio imposed not censor imposed. As for the Abyss I'm not a big fan of the film, if I want to have it I'll import. I'm only interested in Aliens.

Not going to work. If you walk up to a movieplex with the family to "just go see a movie" you aren't going to have time or patience to look up each and every movie playing.

And let's face it, the MPAA gets things right more often than not.

Well, they do. That's essentially what the MPAA and its ratings system is. And at this point, it just makes good business sense to continue to run with the system because there is a large chunk of the populace who relies on the ratings to decide whether or not something is appropriate for their families.

Yeah, but it takes two to tango though. The MPAA didn't order any cuts or censor anything, they just deemed that the content contained therein deemed the films worthy of an X-rating. And because studios were afraid of the X-rating due to the fact that it meant adult content in the eyes of the public, and because they wanted kids to be able to see the films, they complied with the recommendations of footage that needed to be excised in order to bring them down to an R.
