No it's an extremely valuable necessary and important opinion. You know why ? Because it breaks from the smothering consensus. Everybody else in Hollywood has swallowed Scorsese's cock whole. Let at least one person present a different view.

I welcome dissenting views on ANY subject. Want to tear apart my favorite director, actor, movie? Bring it on. I love to read it.

Hollywood is a town of revolting ass kissing. Let one person have the iron balls and integrity to be truly truly free and speak their mind.

It's not some rando on the Internet it's supposed to be your supportive friend you just had dinner with. At least Scorsese has the class not to bad mouth PS on one of his films. If PS didn't like it then he should have kept it to himself.

But hey, grouchy old dude who doesn't give a crap and all that.

He plays a morally weak character who makes baffling/despicable decisions and DiCaprio makes it so compelling to watch for 3+ hours. And it’s challenging for a Hollywood star of his calibre to disappear into a role and transform themselves the way DiCaprio does here. It’s one of the more interesting roles and great performances of a lead actor in awhile.

Have people just become too accustomed to DiCaprio delivering great performances that it’s not such a big deal anymore? And I know the consensus is that Lily Gladstone is the heart of the film and people don’t want her to be overshadowed by DiCaprio, but he should still be getting his share of the accolades for this. All 3 of the main acting performances in this should be considered frontrunners for their respective categories.
It's Cillian's year. Leo will get nominated, methinks, but the Oscar race is kinda over.

I'd much rather see Paul Giamatti win. I just saw "The Holdovers" and his is the performance that has affected me the very most of all the male lead performances this year. Just brilliant.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph deserves all the awards and praise she's been getting, as well. I'd like to see both of them win.

did you factor in post-Covid inflation adjustment?
What use to be $100 million film is now atleast $150 million.
also, film gets close to 3.5 hrs instead of 2 hrs, add few extra million there.
Its like watching 2 films in one long movie.

He saw the comments from Paul Schrader and couldn't wait to come running back into this thread. As bad as those two bangers, Blu Helmut and Mwynn.

Schrader is an invaluable and essential writer and filmmaker. I love his work.

He's also entitled to his own opinions, like anyone else. But I completely disagree with him here. And noting his background as a writer or critic isn't necessarily relevant, given his later-life antics on Facebook. He also recently slammed Joaquin Phoenix, saying he doesn't "get" his appeal at all. He whined on FB because he was kicked out of an online poker game for hitting on the young women and making inappropriate remarks, and he'd befriended and promoted a gay woman singer on FB, whose music he likes, and they became friendly, she even contributed music to "The Card Counter" soundtrack, and now she's backed off from him, too because he made inappropriate sexual remarks about her, too, online. The point is, he says a lot of silly and inappropriate things these days. Former NY Times critic Janet Maslyn posted on his FB wall, "Paul. Please get off of Facebook."

It's not automatic Gospel because one likes that he didn't care for "Killers" but does like "Oppenheimer", LOL.

I still maintain that Scorsese was wise to shift the focus of the book and that DiCaprio was right in not playing the rather ordinary role in which Jesse Plemons was eventually cast.
The Ernest-Molly relationship is actually the heart of the book. The Scorsese film represents a shift in focus based on only the most superficial reading of Grann's book. Scorsese, DiCaprio, and gang got at least that much right.

Has Scorsese bought Shrader?

Shrader is a free man (at least freer than most people on this forum) and lives in a free country.

He can say whatever he damn pleases - despite attempts at draconian censorship.

yes, even with that the 200 million dollar budget is absolutely outrageous. Use your own eyes, what do you think in the movie costs 200 million dollars?

The fact that Oppenheimer - ALSO WITH POST COVID INFLATION - cost 100 million dollars and is in far more settings, has far more characters, far more set-ups, far more locations and time periods and cost half is a damning indictment of Scorsese's excess.

I hope both lose. I don't mind Murphy but found him bland and featureless. Dicaprio I thought was actively terrible and I would love for him to be awarded with a Razzie but sadly that won't happen. I think in the current crop Giamatti is better than both and in a just world Kōji Yakusho, Christian Friedel and Benoit Magimel would be contending for the win, not these guys.

are people still salty because scorsese made fun of superhero movies lol. how many years ago was that….

any time someone complains that this “didn’t make a lot of money”…. you are better endorsement for the movie than someone who loves it. for real.

they spent all that money on it and this is a movie that came out two and a half months ago, and people still can’t atop talking about it.

Scorsese can say whatever about the movies he likes or doesn't like, nobody cares about that.

There is, however, a great deal of hypocrisy in the way he automatically dismisses the work of some talented up-and-coming indie directors simply because they agreed to work for a big paycheck from Disney or WB, while at the same time he takes his projects to whichever streamer is willing to take a substantial loss on them and provide him with the humongous budgets he demands from them.

Yes, this is why it’s important to post actual quotes and a link to the original source instead of twitter screenshots with clickbait headlines.

Giamatti's been overlooked so many times, it's nauseating. American Splendor alone...we can forgive the Rhino cameo....

I'm not sure about every one else, but I really thought Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, Master Gardener, The Killer, Beau is Afraid, and the Holdovers were all great films. Best out of the stuff I watched in 2023 probably.

Also enjoyed a lot of the other movies like Renfield, M3gan, Cocaine Bear, Evil Dead Rise, and most recently Thanksgiving (which I think is one of the best Slasher movies I've seen in a long time, and possibly Eli Roth's best).

Still want to see Zone of Interest, Afire, Dream Scenario, and Anatomy of a Fall.

Did not like May December or Saltburn one bit.
