Wow. The digital code doesn’t even redeem in 4K. 🙄

Thank you. I was just going to ask about this, as I was on the fence about purchasing the digital copy in 4K/HDR from Apple for $19.99, or purchasing the blu-ray for $22.99 (with the hope the digital code would redeem in 4K).

Since purchasing the 4K digital copy from Apple includes the same extras and improved PQ, for a few dollars less, I guess I will go with the digital copy. If at some point a 4K blu-ray is released, I will likely double-dip.

Target here had 3 copies each of both the blu-ray and DVD. Walmart only carried the DVD.

Default Holding A Christmas Classic

Pre-ordered because finding titles such as The Holdovers retail has transitioned from hit or miss to non-existent thanks to Best Buy's recent rack removal.

Shipped with a minty slip and DVD, a MA code which redeemed in 1080p but also turned up for Apple and Vudu. Extras are light but solid, with text intros to the deleted scenes, alternate ending, and two short vignettes for cast and director.

The film itself is definitely one of the year's best, one to own and who knows, perhaps a future Christmas classic.

Just watched this.

Lovely little film.

Thought it was interesting that, in addition to the 3.0 audio and the 1.66 aspect ratio, Payne chose to process the digitally shot film with added CG dirt and specks, and also added some wobble/judder to the image, so it would look like a projected 35mm film print.

Personally I found those affectations a little distracting. Since any digital presentation of an authentic '70s film would have had those artifacts removed. But harmless I guess.

I did like the period-correct studio logos at the beginning.

Agree with the consensus that this is a top-shelf flick. Highly recommended.

I agree, but I didn't find them annoying enough to be overly distracting.

Not necessarily - if you were lucky enough to catch a 35mm print of an authentic 70s film in a theater, then it would look pretty much exactly like what this looked like in theaters.

So if the purpose was to capture the spirit of the thing, then it succeeds brilliantly in that regard.

It might have made more sense as some sort of effect Payne could have added onto just DCPs used in theaters. It's slightly odd on home video.

Again, the movie was sweet and entertaining, so it didn't bug me enough to ruin it, but it definitely didn't help all that much, especially because the movie still didn't look convincingly like it was shot on 35mm film, despite the digital effects.

Where did you even find the code? I just grabbed a copy from Target and don’t have the usual Movies Anywhere slip in the case.

So similar to the cigarette burns at the end of each reel in Ouija: Origin of Evill

Ordered. Canada has to wait a few weeks for it. Looking forward to getting it.

Also would it be any trouble if a label could nab Payne's debut Citizen Ruth?

wouldn't there also be cigarette burns? wouldnt the ratings card show at the end of the whole picture, not at the front?

the film emulation is great, but i dont think it needed the dirt
