Not to fall further into the abyss, but we have regulations that should ensure that animals should be treated as humanely as possible (I understand that can be an oxymoron considering the end results), and that's not always the case, we want everything as fast and as cheaply as possible, and that's true of most industries, and there just aren't enough checks being carried out. There should be severe penalties for doing the things in the videos you mentioned.

But saying that those that think laws protecting animal welfare are hypocrites if they eat meat (where most folks would assume and hope the produce they consume is from animals treated well), is a bit of a stretch.

People consume animal products, but I'd hope most agree that laws regulating their welfare is vital.

I agree with animal welfare laws. The story of the tiger they almost drowned in The Life Of Pi is heart breaking. It used to be you could trust the trainer/owner to look out for the animals safety but too many Hollywood directors would pressure them to get reckless with their own animals, such as killing multiple horses in one scene with trip wires. I just hate censorship and feel the U.K. law is too draconian and down right absurd.

not releasing the film In the UK is completely stupid if the rat didn't die while filming or got hurt while filming then they should just release it and as for horse falls in old westerns they are out of date they just presuming that the horses got hurt or killed but since there is no evidence to prove it then why cut them out the law is out of date are they scared of what animal welfare people might do to them if they do release it.

I think you might need more punctuation than just a period here, bud.

They did cut (or seriously edit) the horse scenes in Conan for the UK.

Which caused some noticeable jumps in the score IIRC

The rat is literally shitting itself with fear due to the experience.

Does it constitute as animal cruelty?
Very likely yes.

Was the production being intentionally malicious and trying to inflict harm to the rat, no.

I understand the reasons why some people and governing bodies may take issue with the scene and sequence. A governing body maybe concerned not just in the welfare of the animal but also the possibility that some individuals, in particular young persons, might try to replicate the event without the actual special oxygenated fluid.

In context of the film it is clear that the rat is safe throughout the experiment, albeit scared shitless, and none of the characters are intentionally trying to harm the rat.

Hippy chastises Monk for his actions which is within character and should inform any naive or mischievous audience member not to replicate this scenario.

Just a friendly reminder that are only two months away until we finally see The Abyss released on 4K UHD. That, and Aliens 4K and True Lies 4K too. :-)

I'm wondering what service/platform you watched it on? I've watched it on both Prime and iTunes and thought the iTunes with the Dolby Vision color grade was vastly superior. The Prime version (straight HDR) had completely out-of-whack colors and highlights with horrible banding, while on iTunes with DV the colors were much more natural with much greater gradations and almost no banding. It looked almost (almost!) filmlike. It has made me reconsider buying the 4k Blu-ray when it comes out.

I saw the Fathom Events screening last month and I have mixed feelings.

Although I'm sad that there's absolutely no film grain at all to be seen, they really seem to have gotten the DNR down to a science.

It doesn't look scrubbed of detail or waxy like others I've seen. It's just clean and sharp.

I would prefer a more filmic look though.
