Not to have a rag fest on the sacred cows of pop culture, but to explore the intricacies of the human movie viewing experience. You can learn as much about a movie, a person and the general public by what they don't like as you can about what they do like.

Assuming everyone is civil to one another I think this sort of stuff is very interesting.
Unfortunately there hasn't really been any intelligent criticism, just a bunch of lists without explanation.

For an actual response to the thread:

Scarface (1983) - I thought it was a fairly decent flick the first time I saw it, but the second time the movie was just a slog to sit through. Plus it's overblow by rappers who generally miss the point of the movie, and that puts a bit of a damper on the experience. The real nail in the coffin for me was seeing the Hawkes original and how superior it is to the De Palma version.

Movies like Hook or The Goonies are largely terrible, but adult fans tend to like them for nostalgia reasons.

Pulp Fiction is the most dramatic example in my mind. There have been many movies I haven't liked, but none have been so built up both critically and popularly and turned out so bad for me.

Kill Bill comes in closely behind. Maybe it's a Tarantino thing, I dunno....

I actually did see Reservoir Dogs after Pulp Fiction (only a few days afterward). So your theory holds true.

I like scarface and even have a poster for it but I almost want to take it down ever since it became so wildly popular in the hip hop scene

I know what you mean, I feel the same way about Fight Club except instead of rappers, it's frat-boys or the like. I've never seen such a mass-misunderstanding of any other movie. The moment someone says "his name was Robert Paulson" I just shake my head.

I feel the same way. Everyone is raving on this movie but it leaves me stone-cold.

Also:
- Titanic (apart from the succesful CGI, there's nothing there for me)
- The English Patient: the only movie in my entire life I actually stopped watching before the end credits rolled.
- Kill Bill: instead of an original movie with oriental influences, I see a movie that adds nothing to the genre and falls from one cliche into the next. I doubt Tarantino even understands the true meaning of and difference between Chinese Wuxia movies and Japanese martial arts movies.

I have said this in other threads:

I have a problem with 2001: A Space Odyssey

It is regarded as such an incredible achievement in filmaking and I simply don't get it. I have a problem with it because so many people I admire list this film as an influence yet I don't see it. I wanna understand. I wanna believe.

i love these threads.

some dude says Godfather (or some universally accepted masterpiece) does nothing for him, trying to seem cool.

then someone asks that dude for his top 10 list, which includes Hulk, Transformers, TDK and Iron Man.

No doubt. However, it probably shouldn't come as a huge surprise that on a Blu-ray (which is a technological, digital medium, after all) forum, many would define "film" as a "technical showcase," superceding any sort of literary effect.

I did think TDK was pretty sweet tho

And on the flip side, some dude will get extremely offended that someone dare not to like The Godfather and of course make fun of their movie collection....oh wait!!!
