They did. Made Blumhouse alot of money. Though bumps in the road sure, the trilogy for Halloween was as far as I was concerned a nice send off. It wasn't Halloween 11, 12, and 13 to me. It was Halloween: The Finale part 1, 2, and 3.

Is it really that hard to get Linda Blair off her couch?

Well, she was on "The Masked Singer" last season, so anything is possible!

Especially since they were streaming the same day as theatrical release.

If there is a sequel called Deceiver, switch the story fully to Linda Blair as the lead who finds a new exorcist or something. I don't know, but give her a major role co-starring at least. Why not?

Should it be about an exorcism again, or go the investigation route like Ex3 or Exorcism of Emily Rose (unlinked to these films)?

Since they have just decided to release The Exorcist: Believer on VOD on October 24th, I'm guessing that a direct sequel could face being cancelled.

The producers might just re-consider DGGs film a stand alone thing and start a new trilogy with a new first entry, not written or directed by DGG and his co-writers.

Since the pandemic Universal Studios puts a lot of their movies on VOD quickly after just a few weeks in theaters. I don't think it has anything to do with the critical or financial reception of the film. They probably figure many people will want to watch a new horror film at home a week before Halloween.

Yeah I've noticed their movies are out on VOD within weeks no matter what kind of success the film has had.

Universal’s VOD strategy hasn’t changed at all. Exorcist: Believer follows their model that they’ve been using for 3+ years now.

Universal has also reported 1B in VOD sales in 3 years while still reaping box office profits.

Thanks for the info; didn't know that this was entirely in line with Universal's recent release strategy.

The next one should have been called Exorcist: Reliever to relieve those of us who don't want any more DGG exorcist films.

Bringing Linda Blair back should be an event.

I think Believer has killed some of the excitement this might have brought.

Believer, was all about the
[Show spoiler]father not believing in the supernatural, but then by the end of the film, he became a believer.

Deceiver, that suggests luring someone to a false reality or situation and then taking advantage of that, likely by the demons again. What they really need to figure out is how to vaporize these demons instead of only temporarily pushing them out and away.

What could be interesting is if Regan is possessed a second time, only much worse on the 2nd round. She could be wandering the hallways of a hospital in full demon form, tormenting the patients with her evil and then it's up to the heroes to stop her. Then again, that is what happens in the classic Exorcist 3, so rather than a hospital, maybe a psychiatric hospital or something for mentally ill. Making the film scary and not another version of Evil Dead would be the next trick.

Linda Blair starred in Repossessed, which was a parody of The Exorcist, but not in a good way. It was an attempt to make a funny movie I'd say. They had Leslie Nielsen during his hit movies streak, so they had the right intentions anyway. In it, she's possessed again, but then is put onto a stage in front of an audience on national TV to raise donations. The concept is kind of humorous anyway and was ahead of reality TV.

I really hope they don't possess an adult Regan.

Careful what you wish for. An artist who takes risks, like it or not, is better than a hired hand for the studio. DGG is a real filmmaker who’s run afoul franchise devotees but he takes chances.

Seeing that the film was divisive, I agree that they need a new voice. But I hope it’s a real artist who pushes back at the studio should they need to. People complained about Rian Johnson and we got the most Reddit, fan-servicey movie in the entire Star Wars series. I would hate to see it become the Conjuring and sinister and be action-heavy in terms of pace and scares. Although many may be asking for that. I think The Exorcist needs to be drama first. The first film had many characters to focus on. I would say… pick 2-3 and hammer home the theme.

The sequel will hopefully have artist who has a radical idea to reinvent the exorcism scene. The original worked so well because it was new and fresh. Even if done well, it’s been done so many times. They need to come up with something new. And I’ll say it (like the force connection in SW). Don’t be afraid to rewrite the rules. Believer had some new ideas about hell, its powers. The first film doesn’t establish many rules. There’s room to play with deception and the demons purpose. It’s called deceiver so trick us.

Exorcist came out at the height of Catholicism in America. The country is so divided that it feels ripe for a believer vs skeptic storyline. I thought Believer scraped that concept but didn’t fully commit as Odom became convinced so quickly.

It would probably be best to scrap any sequel plans. It will only get worse from here...

Maybe they'll bring Linda, Ellen, Kitty Winn, even James Earl Jones back and make a new film. Not disregarding Believer, just go a different direction now. Just a thought.

The plot of the new one should be Regan gets repossessed and plays hide and seek with Chris around her house.
