They would probably say this is an event that created an entire new time line. Meaning there is now an alternate past, present and future. The only people from the original timeline are now gone.

You've got a good line of thinking, though. It can be done, if the film actually comes to completion.

Well it is not really gone, as that is still the time line for The Next Generation. I just do not see anything being done with Shatner anymore. When I said the Original Timeline I meant Spock and Nero and his crew.

I'd rather see a sequel starring the current cast (Pine, Saldana, Quinto etc.) but I'll take what I can get. Exploration-based sci-fi is wonderful and we don't get enough of those.

I guess we truly couldn't say with any certainty what occurred in the movie version of the "original" timeline anyhow.

Yeah things can get a little wonky when dealing with time travel. I would think the only rule would be, it was a one way trip. If that is accurate then a new time line should exist. Meaning the past is wide open.

This also means that when the time comes they can reboot Next Generation in the Kelvin time line.

Depends on what they decide what they mean by decades. The Kelvin branch began at the same time as Kirk was born. And if they only mean 2 or 3 decades then it would still be the Kelvin branch

Another interesting piece of information I found out in the wake of this announcement is that Erik Jendresen, the writer of the cancelled Romulan War script from 2005 that I mentioned earlier, also co-wrote Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning.

Now I’d be even less surprised if that’s what this turns out as. “Decades before JJ’s film,” first of all, could simply be a description for the non-Trekkies who don’t even remember the alternate timeline business. If we’re really getting technical, the opening scene of the movie is where the timelines diverge. Yeah, sure, that’s still 25 years before the main events of that film, but the late 2150’s of the Romulan Wars is still “decades” before 2233 when JJ’s film opens.

Like I said, the basic premise of the ‘09 movie (aside from the alternate timeline elements) itself reused a movie idea that was almost 20 years old at the time. Maybe Paramount is going back to the well again for this one.

I can’t help but remember that a Superman Reboot, a Batman vs Superman film, and a Justice League movie were all kicking around WB in various stages of development in the 90’s/00’s only for all three to eventually happen in the 2010’s.

This would also be the first movie not to feature the Enterprise. It wasn't built until after Kelvin was destroyed. I'm definitely excited and curious what this is.

Good thought, which kind of proves that there is a different past time line, because that erases Star Trek Enterprise.

I’ve been saying for years we need more stories set in the original timeline. Picard was great but I’d love to see what else they could do. They really missed out not having a deep space 9 crossover.

I would really like to see Star Trek look to the future. Be forward looking. I know nostalgia sells. Also, I feel like having a TV show cast as a foundation for later films works really well for this franchise. I don't know. Anyway, any new Star Trek film is cause for celebration. Bring it on!
