I used to live on the outskirts of Manchester until about 25 years ago. The city is fine if you like architecture, museums and history - it was a very industrious city back in the day, and some of the old cotton mills have been transformed into expensive apartments. Media City and the Quays is home to The Lowry and The Imperial War Museum (Northern), and is also where you'll find the Corrie Experience.

About an hour's drive away, you can be in the Peak District - a whole different world and a beautiful part of the country if you love countryside and long scenic walks.

Paris was okay, but I haven't been there since 1981 on a school trip.

Agreed, Northumberland (near me) is also beautiful, with many historic landmarks.

I'd love to visit someday. It's a part of the country I've never visited but have always heard lovely things said about Northumberland National Park.

We were up that way in early December when staying at Chillingham Castle. They also have the oldest wild cattle in the country nearby. They literally look ancient, and make odd noises out in the woods at night, which adds to the spooky feel of the castle.

Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Target, and other sellers of physical media are going to need to use media mail more often to avoid the coming January 21st yearly price increases. USPS ground advantage is seeing average price increase of 5.4% on January 21st 2024, and 5.7% average increase for priority mail. This would in theory raise the cost of physical media by around 6% this year, however it appears this round of price increases might not affect media mail. With media mail being around $3.92 for up to 1 pound and $55.67 for 70 pounds. But one will have to see if media mail is except from the price changes, since its not mentioned online yet. But if media mail gets around 6% price increase also, physical media will most likely be going up 6%. But if media mail is exempt from the price increase physical media might stay about the same price as long as Amazon and others use media mail. Amazon, Best Buy, and others could save a lot of money by using media mail in both directions, including for defective returns for physical media on optical discs and books.

https://faq.usps.com/s/article/2024-...e-Price-Change

A lot of this inflation is being caused by the shipping prices for USPS, UPS, and Fed Ex ground increasing around 6% or more every year. The retail stores have to pay shipping freight charges to get the items to the store and then shipping charges again to get the merchandise delivered to customers. That can sometimes result in around 12% increase in price of the product, that is sometimes hidden with new models of some products dropping input and output features to hide inflation. Maybe one day the United States in decades to come might switch to 100% low-cost nuclear power plants with zero carbon emissions, then with 100% electrically powered freight/delivery trucks there would start to be deflation instead of inflation since delivery prices would start going down over several decades. AI drones and robots delivering packages will help keep costs lower in the future.

Ouch. What else is expected in this economy though? Nothing is going down or staying level. I dont mind paying for discs and will keep supporting physical media. But, cost inscreases will not help the industry.

Shipping rates have increased every year but I've never seen physical media prices raise at the same rate and there is no reason to think that they will this time.

Get comfortable with not owning your games.

Get comfortable with not owning movies, books, music ... basically all the things people used to like owning.

Get comfortable with having to ask to see other people's things. It's the future and a lot of sheep are breaking the doors down to get to it.

Just like EVERYTHING, this is a matter of control and they would like us to give up the control because they think it will result in higher profits.

They can get used to not owning my money. I would rather buy something than rent it. I know nothing is forever but the things I own are under my control and that's the way I like it.

Been saying it for years, most of us have. It’s exhausting but can’t be stopped now. We live in a disposable, shallow world now.

Give it 5 years and we will be subscribing to washing machines, cookers, smart devices, TVs, speakers, fridges etc.. going back to 70’s and early 80’s with rentals of household goods.
The carrot on the stick will be items get upgraded and you get latest model if they can’t repair.

The hook? Climate and circular economy.

In other words, another opportunity to rip off customers.

Britbox offered us a good deal if we subed for a year so we did. Could not believe they now insert a BBC bug in the upper left of content.

Early on streamers made a big deal about how they were different from cable and broadcast. Now there is very little difference with ads and now bugs. “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss” becomes more true as time moves on.

Here, Britbox has been incorporated into ITV X, which is the broadcasters new streaming service. The problem? The tv app is utter crap and crashes all the time. I gave it 2 months and packed it in.

BBB IPlayer on the other hand is very reliable and Channel 4 have recently improved. C5 is merging with Pluto this year and we are getting all broadcast channels via a new service distributed through broadband/fibre at the back end of the year.

If you are interested, BBC is the service we pay for via a yearly licence in the U.K. ITV, C4 and C5 are all commercial channels.

Netflix still the most popular/reliable. Disney+ and Amazon battle it out for the remaining spoils.

We get Tubi this year too.

Are you including yourself in that "we" or did you mean to say "they"? I certainly won't be buying any electronics or appliances that require a subscription.

My clothes washer and dryer has wifi capability so I thought I would set it up.

At first, it was nice because my watch or phone would let me know when the cycle was complete and that was useful.

However, my washer and dryer started texting me non stop and that felt bad because they seemed to care about me more than any living person. They would ask me if I wanted to know what the most popular cycles I used were or give me statistics about how and when I was using the machines.

I had to turn it off.... I was being stalked and hounded by my washing machine.

Someone else recently found his appliances were using 3GB of data per day for who knows what. I will go look that up and link the article.

"Your washing machine could be sending 3.7 GB of data a day — LG washing machine owner disconnected his device from Wi-Fi after noticing excessive outgoing daily data traffic"

https://www.tomshardware.com/network...-of-data-a-day

I am getting more "old fashioned" by the minute these days. Time to go yell at some clouds.

Control is, and always has been, an illusion IMHO.
I don't know that I'm necessarily breaking down any doors, but I guess I'm one of the sheep that you mentioned.
Last year, the most cinematic experience I had in my HT was OPPENHEIMER. I'm really glad that the UHD was released day and date so that I didn't have to choose the streaming option.
It was visually and sonically stunning which added to the presentation of what I think was the movie of the year.
As we experienced Christmas for the first time last month, we loaded up on crappy movies. I can't remember anything I've ever streamed looking as bad as the Bluray of THE FAMILY MAN and the new UHD of LOVE ACTUALLY...
Woof...

Both of these titles are represented far worse on physical media than LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND, SALTBURN and SOCIETY OF THE SNOW currently look and sound streamed in my HT.
I'd buy all 3 of these if made available on physical
media but would not deny myself the pleasure of watching them now for a release that may, in these cases specifically, never come.
Conversely, I'm holding off on KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON on UHD. I enjoyed watching it streamed even though I can't say that it's A/V presentation was anything to right home about. I'm sure the physical release will be better- I just don't think the movie is meant to be much of an A/V feast.
I came to my decision to hold off because, as much a I liked the movie, and will watch it again, I'm not in any rush...
I've had my UHD of BLOOD SIMPLE for a couple of days but will be waiting on that one for a few weeks... I'm going to be extending my dry January into February and that title warrants a dram..LOL...
I'll be celebrating my 13th birthday at the end of February and I think that will make a fine watch... as long as I stay away from the thread on this forum savaging this release...

I find the comparison to video games interesting. I bought my son a STEAM DECK for his first ever Christmas present. As he downloaded his existing game from his STEAM account, it brought home what the future may look like for movies..

With digital, we don’t have the peace of mind that we own that title and can revisit when we see fit.
That one fact is worth every penny disc wise, before I even get started on AV, etc..

.
And with Saltburn ... it would be several decades before I would revisit it. I would have to completely forget it to want to see it again.

But that's just me.

And, everyone who watched it with me.
