I liked this movie, even though in my opinion it is the weakest of the trilogy and am still in shock on how nobody mentions anything about a dirt bike showing up in the way distant future in a different planet! Specially when the first film had a motorcycle without wheels!

I just re-watched the trilogy last week. First time I’ve seen them in a few years.
2009 is still everything a summer blockbuster should be and one of the best in the last few decades. I always liked Into Darkness but would say it goes a little off the rails in the second half. On this rewatch though I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. An absolute blast. It’s just unfortunate that they cast a posh British man to play Khan which messes with the alternate timeline gimmick, and the whole magic blood/Kirk dying thing is dumb and never should’ve happened, but it doesn’t ruin my enjoyment. My feelings toward Beyond haven’t changed and it’s still my least favourite by a considerable margin. The film lacks energy and the storyline doesn’t seem worthy of the big screen. Also don’t like Kirk turning into Ethan Hunt and doing all these death defying stunts during the climax. The Beastie Boys - Sabotage scene however is badass and a highlight of the 3 films. I think Star Trek ‘09 and Into Darkness are the strongest back-to-back set of Trek films. I really hope they do another one like was mentioned in the latest report. Apparently it’s still in the works to serve as a finale for the reboot cast. They definitely deserve a better send-off than Beyond. And I find it odd how people talk about Into Darkness as if it’s some widely hated film when it was a critical and financial success and has high audience scores everywhere. My take was that it was a mess of a script, if you are going to try to use arguably the best Trek film of all as the basis for your story, at least make it feel earned. We are simply too early into the new crew’s adventures for a villain like that to feel viable. The first film set things up lovely and I was genuinely excited to see what they would do. Into Darkness was lazy, BC was miscast, parts just didn’t make sense and it felt like a massive u-turn after a very entertaining reboot. All the stories they could have told and they try to reboot the very best instead of organically finding their stride. A dreadful decision, imo. I think it’s a turd to be honest. Just glad Beyond was at least a fun romp to rinse the horrible taste from one’s mouth. Box office was decent but hardly great. 190 million budget something like 460 million box office. A relatively small profit really. Part of the reason it did ok was the strength of the reboot. By the time Beyond released, the damage was done. Last edited by Steedeel; 01-26-2024 at 12:16 AM. |
