The Abyss 4K UHD (1989)

They're not "anamorphic enhanced", the player is just doing its own zoom to 16:9 and then upscaling it. My Panny 310 does the same thing, but Panny junked any and all aspect ratio control on their 4K decks which is such a shame. Excellent zoom options on the OPPO tho

I remember the abyss being enhanced but not the original star wars none special editions. they were 4:3

Abyss was never released in anamorphic anywhere. There was an "anamorphic" R6 Chinese DVD...but it was the non-a transfer uprezzed into fake anamorphic (just like what our players are doing).

right. I was surprised that the player would do it for the abyss. look forward to the 4k/blu ray that comes out next month.

I'd forgotten about the days when people didn't know they could stretch a non anamorphic dvd to the correct ratio or squeeze an anamorphic dvd onto a 4:3 tv.

Nowadays it's just watching a portrait clip in a landscape frame on a portrait held phone (that doesn't work in landscape)

I didn't think so. Honestly, I'm glad Best Buy isn't selling steelbook movies anymore. If "The Abyss", "True Lies" & "ALIENS" (it looks better in all caps) gets released in steelbook, doesn't cost TOO MUCH, and the artwork isn't shite (like a third of them are)... I will pick them up (assuming these regular 4K releases don't go on sale for a really good price before then).

I can't remember what I did with non-anamorphic DVDs with my 16:9 CRT. I might have watched them on a 4:3 and just not on the 16:9. I know I've watched a few window-boxed ones on my HD TVs, as the players often lock out screen size controls.

Maybe because you're not looking right? There's a Dolby Vision/Atmos logo next to the DTS-HD Master Audio logo on the back.

It was also only the special edition, the theatrical cut wasn't included

And even then the US DVD had the altered theatrical cut anyway which is fortunately being rectified with this release, making the first time since I think 1990 that the unaltered theatrical cut (minus the aspect ratio) was being released physically

I think its kind of equal- most of the time I have to import the UK or foreign release for a release that should be all across the board. Will see how I like it when I get it. I have the Spain BD of True Lies so we will see, but im not that picky I think I prefer different cover art over the actually blurays or 4ks. ��
