I honestly have no idea, I didn't even know the OCN was lost. I'm very shocked by that news.

But if they're still in the process of looking for it, we're certainly not getting a UHD within the next few months I'll say that much.

I wouldn't panic just yet. Obtaining such elements from smaller rightsholders isn't always easy and sometimes the difficulty obtaining such elements is down to poor communication somewhere along the line as opposed to them actually being missing.

And this situation with Sleepaway Camp is further food for thought regarding physical media.
In a real sense, owners of physical media ARE preservers of culture. A sobering thought, but that "old" blu ray of Sleepaway Camp just might be the best available copy of the film going forward.

Rights owners and the studios can't be trusted to be the only keepers of this stuff, as has been proven time and time again.

I hope that's what they mean.

Would be insane for them to go missing in this day and age, especially since they were able to access them for SF's BD a decade ago.

Fingers crossed.

I still haven't emotionally recovered from the negative for Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2 being lost.

Sleepaway Camp would be the one time I would rather the original poster not be used for the 4K UHD release. They should use a still of that one scene, you know the one for the cover.

Grabbed a copy of this when it dropped to 24 on Amazon. Came next day, slip intact. No disc problems. Wow, looks just stunning. The color and detail! Fantastic release!

I'm probably the only person alive who was kinda disappointed that the theatrical version wasn't on a 4K disc. How well integrated is the unrated material? Does it still stick out on the 4K as noticeably inferior quality footage or does it finally mix seamlessly with the rest of the film? If it's finally seamlessly integrated into the film then I'll care a lot less about the theatrical not being on 4K..

Those on a budget and don't mind a slight hit in PQ, this is $4.99 on iTunes (4K DV).

It’s all rather backwards. You would think the theatrical would get the 4K and the unrated put on a BD. For example, Army of Darkness came with 4 cuts and only the theatrical getting the 4K treatment.

Moreover, many were displeased to learn JFK only included the Director’s Cut on 4K with the preferred (to some) theatrical cut on a BD.

All over the place. With that being said, I’m perfectly fine with the unrated cut of Valentine on 4K.

How is that backwards? And why would the theatrical cut get the UHD and not the unrated? The R-rated theatrical cut only exists because of cuts that had to be made in order to obtain that R rating. The unrated cut is closest to the director's original vision. And this isn't a case like Army of Darkness where the multiple cuts offer different versions of the film where scenes are added/removed, re-arranged, etc. The theatrical cut of MBV is the exact same version of the film from a narrative perspective, it's only missing the extra gore that was always meant to be there.

SF made the right decision by putting the unrated cut on 4K. And while I'm glad they included it for completeness' sake, I'm never watching the neutered R-rated version ever again.

And I should add, I think there's a big difference between having multiple versions of a film (such as a director revisiting their work to make a "director's cut" in the case of JFK and different cuts made for different markets in the case of Army of Darkness) vs. simply cutting out footage in order to avoid getting an X rating. In those cases, that's why fans prefer unrated cuts over their censored R-rated theatrical cuts.

The only reason we have another cut of My Bloody Valentine is because of censorship.

Yeah, the unrated cut of My Bloody Valentine is widely considered the superior version of the film. People would've rightfully been pissed if it was BD-only.

Agreed 100%

It’s weird that you can upgrade MBV (theatrical) to UHD for $5 on Vudu, but the uncut is not even available in HDX. Last year, I watched the uncut version on Max, around Valentines Day. Was hoping it would become available to buy, since a digital copy was not provided, with the disc.

Perhaps my example of using Army of Darkness & JFK was a poor one! When it comes to MBV, I agree that SF made the right decision and I ever said in my post that I prefer the unrated cut which is the original intended version from the Director. As you said, the R-rated cut only exists to please the MPA and I have no reason to ever watch the butchered cut either.

-Streamingsux never mentioned which cut they preferred. Only brought up the fact that it was unfortunate that both cuts were not on 4K. So I decided to opine and here we are.

I was only implying that SF is a bit "backwards" = inconsistent when it comes to which cut(s) receive the 4K treatment. I cannot bash them too harshly as it almost always comes down to cost as Oliver Stone even referenced in the Shout/JFK announcement:
Quote:
We had to make a decision as to which version to release on 4K UHD, and we chose the director’s cut, which is 17 minutes longer. I do understand that the theatrical cut is preferred by many, but this was a case where we felt giving the audience “more” with the longer version was the right decision. There was simply not enough money to release both."
It is what it is!

Many still purchased Army of Darkness (heck, the Steelbook was $10 this week), even though it only included the theatrical cut on 4K. I am in the same boat as those who prefer the unrated cuts of Army.

When it comes to JFK...I've only seen the DC, so it didn't really bother me all that much but I understood the frustration over not receiving both cuts. People were not happy about it which is why Oliver Stone had to chime in.
