I cancelled all three. I will just watch my Aliens BD like I do with T2. If I am in the mood to watch the special edition of The Abyss I will put on the $10 VUDU copy that I have. I have the $10 VUDU of True Lies but I am not sure I want to bother at all with the film now.

A new 4K streaming release will invariably mirror the concurrent disc. The point was that this is the same release. Digital is usually early (granted, not usually quite as early as these got released), but the discs coming out are the physical version of the same 4K release.

The Halloween comparison came because Halloween is not a studio-controlled film. It’s owned by a tiny company who basically only has *that movie,* and a couple of its sequels. They have a small handful of other obscure titles, but they’re not really a studio.

Actual studio distributors have departments (unless they outsource) that specialize in home media mastering… mastering and encoding the content to look good on a screen. Trancas does not. Halloween’s digital release being so bad and the discs being so good is an anomaly… because the digital release was slapped together with no help from an actual distributor. It’s a quick and dirty (and botched) rip of the Lionsgate restoration.

With studio films, like Aliens, studios prepare individual versions optimized to look their best for each specific format, but they all use the same *finished* master source (cases of recycled BDs thrown into 4Ks notwithstanding, of course). Digital versions do often get additional processing to get the “best-looking” image at a low bitrate, but they still retain a semblance of the film grain texture, but with compression artifacts and *some* additional DNR. But Aliens and True Lies don’t have the usual “digital compression” smoothing. Everything looks overly shiny, waxy, *fake*.
I hear you, I've never heard of a studio doing two masters at the same time for the exact same movie (unless we're getting in a time machine and going back to the days of pan-and-scan vs. widescreen home releases, or Disney+ streaming "IMAX-Enhanced" versions of films alongside their standard home-release versions). What we got on streaming is what's coming to disc, just the disc version is going to be superior by virtue of the tech.

Cameron wounded physical media with his A.I. masterings, I just put it out of its misery.

I ordered double of all three to make up for that cancelled order, so we should be good.

Don’t worry, the incredibly talented Christopher Nolan will heal it.

You may enlighten me [If he also works at Lightstorm Entertainment and 20th Century (Fox) Studios]

FYI: Christopher Nolan is qualified to work at either Universal and Warner Bros.

Nolan should restore Aliens, True Lies and The Abyss on 4K UHD. Not only will the picture still look awful but you won't be able to understand the dialogue either.

I watched Oppenheimer and I felt like I was watching a 3-hour montage. Constant suspenseful music, even in scenes that aren’t suspenseful. Rapid-fire dialogue with barely any pauses between. I remember getting through about 40 minutes of Tenet and couldn’t finish it for the same reason. I don’t remember his earlier films being like this.

Christopher Nolan is actually 3 moles and a ferret in a trench coat remote controlled by James Cameron's "other self." I know this, we all know this, but everyone is afraid to say it.

Nolan would give Aliens that milky black level the marines could dip their cornbread in it

Cameron and Nolan, in your world (and your world only) the two worst directors of all time.

You must LOVE Uwe Boll, right?

Thankfully, most people disagreed and the movie was a smash hit.

In-joke. Steve has an obsessional hatred of Nolan, which he tells us about every week. It seems Cameron has joined that list.
