Well, considering that all we had before were crappy DVD's of two of these JC movies, I'm sure I'll get used to it. While I love film grain, I'll take them over the ancient DVD's any day at this point. Aliens 4k is gonna be the "interesting" watch for me, given it had already had a blu-ray release before.

I think I'm gonna bite the bullet on all three.

At least T2 had a good Blu-ray to fall back on, making that 4K unnecessary. Aliens had a great Blu-ray despite the controversial "degraining and denoising" process, but that's it. The other two had DVDs.

If these suck after dropping $25 each on them, I will raise holy hell about it. Till then I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

The caps of The Abyss on here are questionable, but not awful.

Now, I've been royally out of the loop. What can you guys tell me about the restorations of these three films? I promise I'm not trolling or starting shit, I just truly have no clue what to make of al the DNR and AI rumors I've been hearing.

I'd say just wait till the actual 4K disks come out, a lot of the controversy has stemmed from heavily compressed streaming versions that only make the issues even worse

It really pains me to see Director's who started their careers with film end up hating the look of grain. I think James Cameron has allowed himself to be in that digital bubble working on Avatar for so long that seeing organic 35mm film print totally catches him off guard. Such a shame, but this is the best version available so I'll buy it.

Nowhere in the site review site does it says "Stunning Video"

In fact the review points out many of the issues that people have criticised the streaming version of having.

It literally says “Stunning video” at the top of the review, under the pics at the top of the review.

Fair enough. However when you click directly on the review from the Latest Reviews list on the main page (which is what I did) that little blurb doesn't appear anywhere on the review page. And actually reading the review it certainly doesn't read as something the reviewer would classify as "Stunning Video"

I only read part of the site review. Walls of text give me a headache.

They actually rate the Blu-ray version higher. That should make 4Kphobes happy. It's a carefully worded review that kinda stays neutral, which is what all reviews should strive for. Now, for that shipping notification...

I’d say the site review is fair…

…and it puts in even starker relief just how laughably over the top their Titanic 4K review was. If The Abyss is a 4/5, then so is Titanic, for every one of the same reasons.

How come you even feel compelled to drop $75+ on stuff you don't feel confident about? That's a lot of coin, I could literally choose from ten other sure thing discs I need right now with that cash. Don't buy garbage if you already know it's garbage, your common sense is already telling you these are bad products, it doesn't matter if it's a Jam Jimberon film or not, don't let that control you.

Good site review, and is it really the blu-ray better than the 4k?

My guess would be that the BluRay is inherently softer looking, so maybe the AI tinkering is less obvious.

No. The HD and 4k blu-ray reviews aren't related. The HD is a 4.5 within the context of other HD Blu-ray releases. The 4k is a 4 in relation to other 4k releases.

Thanks for clarifying. It’s amazing to me how many people still don’t get this as many years as we are into 4K reviews on this site. BD picture quality scores are regularly a tad higher for this very reason. If anything, 4K transfers reveal more, hence it’s a harsher standard of measure.

... Jam Jimberon is one of my favorite directors, I'd recognize his work anywhere ...

I ordered a copy from Amazon the other night after I posted the link to a high praise review of this 4K release, and as of right now --I just checked-- they indicate only "Order Received," and, "We will email you when we have an estimated delivery date."

It may be due to supply chain issues, or maybe Amazon is contemplating getting out of selling physical media also.

If it's the latter, I'll make it a point to order considerably less from them.
