I really wish BDA would just pay WB to go Blu. Not just to end the format war, though. I really want to see the HD VD fans explain how Toshiba paying off studios is perfectly OK while BDA doing the same thing is consummate evil.

Well the most hyped PiP so far has been the 300 'raw bluescreen' footage track which wasn't a commentary track and could be quite useful on it's own.

But the real question is, can a PiP track be played by itself on BD, or even HD DVD for that matter? If it can, I believe that takes away pretty much any argument about Profile 1.0 players which let's face it, are in low numbers and will soon be vastly outnumbered by Profile 1.1 and higher players.

Thanks Kjack - good to see you posting here.

Edit - btw just saw your answer to the 1.1 disc not playing on the 1.0 player you posted on AVS (and the bs that followed). Thanks making the truth clear....you can lead a horse to water but idiots will always be idiots....

I hope you don't mind me copying your post here for everyone to see.

All new content is tested on prototype, pre-production, current and older players with various firmware versions. We even do this at Sigma just for our own QA purposes. We also had to do it for a few years for DVD when it first came out.

If a profile 1.1 disc is played in a 1.0 player, the API specifies how the player is to respond to the 1.1-specific calls.

I just returned from the Future where I learned the TL51 is a Terminator model built by Toshiba that will be sent back to our current time, to terminate all bluray owners.

The good news is that it locks up frequently and may need to be boiled between terminations.

I am not Talk, but I can tell you this: as usual, the A-Man is full of it. The very definition of Profile 1.1 includes some local, non-volatile memory (at least 256 MB, IIRC). Similarly, Profile 2.0 mandates at least 1GB of non-volatile memory. There's no such thing as a Profile 1.1 or 2.0 player with no local memory.

The thing about FUD, is if you say it enough times it becomes reality to some people.
We see this in politics, religion, and even in this little optical disc Format War....

There was a list of companies making HD DVD and BD players -- could someone please point me to it?

I wouldn't call them idiots. Most have their agenda (kill Blu-ray), so are not interested in anything that doesn't help them accomplish that goal.

Anyway, here's our new Blu-ray player reference design board, designed to get OEMs/ODMs into production as quickly and easily as possible. A profile 1.1 reference design player, complete with case and drive, will be demo'd at CEATEC in a couple of weeks.

Keith:

So what would that board be capable of?

Looks like 7.1 analog out?

TrueHD decoding on board? Raw over HDMI?
DTS HDMA decoding on board? Raw over HDMI?

Based on one of your previous responses would I be correct in assuming SD PiP, and not HD?

Thanks

Very pretty Keith

Loooks like a pretty small form factor too. Personally I like my electronics built like a tank, but DVD players have proven people like the small, and it's definately cheaper to build

That's a beautiful thing!

I've always found a correlation between the engineering of the motherboard and the overall quality of the product it's used in. Maybe it is simply pride by all involved to raise their bar to the level of the board.

Congratulations Keith, to you and all the folks involved!

Wow, 10 seconds after posting...

7.1 analog out
Dolby TrueHD 7.1 decoding or bitstream over HDMI
DTS-HD MA 7.1 decoding or bitstream over HDMI
1080p24 and 1080p60 output supported

This particular design supports SD PiP and can support Profile 2. That's all I'll say for now.

Needs to have 1GB onboard for that

KJack- Would some kind of USB slot qualify for the non-volitile memory requirement? In other words can somene slap in a thumbdrive, or do they not want it removeable for copy protection reasons?

1GB NAND flash for local storage, 64MB NOR flash for persistent storage, 384MB of DRAM.

Yes, some player manufacturers want to use that technique instead of putting the large amount of flash in the player, so as not to force everyone to pay for something most people will not use. However, USB is not popular for that since it sticks out, looking ugly. So look for flash memory card slots to be used instead. And use it view photos from your digital camera while you're at it.
