For some reason I can’t sense anything big this month. Here’s what I HOPING for, but not expecting:

-Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid (come on, guys, it’s been five years, surely it’s done by now)
-The Thief Of Bagdad
-Greed/other Stroheim
-Kubrick on 4K
-On The Waterfront 4K
-Paper Moon
-More Scorsese
-The Magnificent Ambersons (with the special features from the laserdisc)
-The Devils 4K (Hell will freeze over before this happens, but it’s nice to dream)
-The new restoration of Tokyo Story on 4K
-Kurosawa on 4K
-The Unbearable Lightness Of Being
-Something by P&P on 4K
-Captain Blood 4K
-King Kong (1933) 4K

It looks like Army of Shadows might have new screenshots, so a Criterion UHD could be coinciding with StudioCanal’s.

P.S. A lot of people on CriterionForum seem quite confident Atlantics will get a 4K release. It seems a bit niche for the format to me.

Is Atlantics streaming in 4K on Netflix? If so, that would seem like a clear sign of whether it gets the 4K treatment or not.

As for Army of Shadows, I was thinking that the screenshots looked a bit updated. The same for Tokyo Story, but I'm not sure.

It's like we need to keep tabs on every page each month to see changes in screenshots.

For what it's worth, the screenshots for Le Samourai have not updated. Nor have the screenshots for Spellbound or The Spirit of the Beehive.

Is a (guaranteed to be 4K SDR) UHD release of Tokyo Story really necessary given the state of its elements and the fact we already have FiM-encoded Blu-rays sourced from the newest master?

Either way, La Dolce Vita got new screenshots, but the UHD was never announced. Maybe an eleventh hour rights issue cropped up with that one.

That's one take on it. Another is that expecting a new, full price product to be undamaged isn't unreasonable and that this issue is an obvious consequence of fewer replicator plants and less competition.

Regardless, as physical sales decrease, prices will most likely increase anyway as businesses adjust to to keep it a viable business model.

Haven't come across any new pages yet. Sometimes they don't get updated until closer to the announcement time. That was the case with Peeping Tom last month.

Is there really anything to the number of screenshots to determine whether they’re new or not? Red Desert, Fellini Roma, and Diabolique each have quite a few more than the usual three for older titles, but there’s nothing to suggest those will arrive on UHD anytime soon. Roma doesn’t even have a 4K master.

I do wonder if people are getting tricked into thinking significantly more than three screenshots for a single film automatically means “new screenshots” when that’s often not the case. Maybe sometimes Criterion just found a few more screen grabs for a particular film they thought would prettify their website.

The best way to check is to use Archive.org's way back machine to check an archived version of the page, and compare the two. The archive page can take a while to load images, and this can get tedious quickly. It's the method I usually use to verify new images, though I sort of have a running memory of probably a hundred pages now.

Complete Monterey Pop UHD would be terrific.

Maybe Julius Caesar (1953) also?

The past 2 years Criterion has released a Scorsese in July. 2022 Raging Bull and last year After Hours. Perhaps Alice...for its 50th Anniversary or a 4k UHD upgrade of The Age of Innocence will happen this year.

.
Even though the current BD is excellent, a UHD upgrade would be great. It is one of my favorite films.

Well, Taxi Driver is on 4K UHD in one of the Columbia 4K boxsets. But so was The Last Picture Show, and Criterion released that one in 4K, so it's probably not impossible for the former to get it too

I think La Dolce Vita will eventually return to Criterion with a UHD disc, along with Nashville and Harold and Maude.

There is a 4k restoration of CLASSE TOUS RISQUES currenly making the rounds. I would imagine this will have a upgrade this year.
