It is possible to make a version 1.1 the does not work correctly on a 1.0 player, but it is the responsibility of the content author to make sure the player and software are working as expected. We routinely do extensive tests of our discs to confirm compatibility of the software and players. As you would expect, the content owners are not in the business of going to the expense of putting content on the retail shelf that comes back to the store with a disappointed customer bringing it back...

This particular design supports SD PiP and can support Profile 2. That's all I'll say for now.

Paid, I don't know if you'd have any info on this or not, but do you know if the BDA is planning to exploit the fact that FOX is broadcasting the Super Bowl this season?

Can talk comment on this?

This is pure rubbish...

There is local storage available for both profile 1.1 and 2.0 players. When we author features for a profile 1.1 player, we will confirm if the player is profile 1.1. The same applies to profile 2.0. Our efforts on getting the most out of these profiles are concentrated on the complexity of giving the customer additional content for download and integrating it with the content on the disc.

I have a question about PiP. Is it possible to watch the PiP by itself, as in not overlayed over the video and full screen? If so, wouldn't this be a solution for older players as well? While a Profile 1.0 player can't play both video streams at the same time, they still can get the extra content by playing it by itself, perhaps from a seperate selection in the extras menu. That is if the stream of the PiP can be played that way. I hope it can, even if I have a player that can do the PiP properly. Sometimes you just want to watch the extras and not have the feature playing. Any insiders know if this is possible with BD-J?
There is a scaling function in the player that will allow PiP to be played full screen.

I'm not sure how Blu-ray will leverage this.

Paidgeek, I asked this a couple of days ago: Is Iron Man being distributed by SONY in Japan and Spain? There´s a press release from Marvel from some time ago saying so, and I guess it would mean a blu-ray release in these contries (rest of the world is PARAMOUNT so...). Can you find out? Thanks.

Paid,

Just curious, did the HTF approach you? And how often are you going to post over there?

Couldn't hurt to promote the format during the most watched television events of the year. Heck, even if it's just FOX's own titles that's still tremendous exposure for the format.

hi Paidgeek,

Some time ago, you mentioned the possibility that some Blu-ray titles could also store a portable version of the main feature.

I'd like to know if this idea is taking shape. Is Sony planning to test this feature on an upcoming release, with a version of the movie that could be downloaded onto an iPod and the PSP?

Clearly, Disney would be a perfect candidate to implement this feature for obvious reasons but it would be great if we could expect something similar from Sony as well.

Paid,

Welcome back. Can you share any specifics on the PiP in Hairspray?

First: Is it a secondary video stream or is it embedded in an alternate primary video stream a la Crank et al.?

Second: If it is an independent stream, will we have the ability to choose positioning, sizing, or opacity?

Thanks!

This is still a concept, but we are continuing to work on it.

Sorry, but we are not authoring this title so I don't have specifics...

It's a great concept. So is Managed Copy. But, BD50 capacity allows optimized versions to be created and supplied, rather than re-encodes of downscaled decodes. It could also be done via BD-Live I suspect.

Any of these will tie in beautifully with the PS/3 - PSP linkup.

According to Variety Asia, SPHE Japan is the one. And we get a nice bonus:

Marvel Entertainment said Tuesday that Sony Pictures has acquired the distribution rights in Japan and Spain for its upcoming "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk."

Paidgeek,

What can you tell us about the quality of the upcoming 'Monty Python's Life of Brian'? Since this is the 30th anniversary edition I am kind of wondering if it is forced to BD because of that or if it can hold it's own as a HD title?

Say that the PQ is solid and it's a pre-order for me...

PS. Was it delayed because of quality issues?
