Default James Newton Howard

I started a thread about KING KONG but the score got me thinking about some of his other films. I watched THE PRINCE OF TIDES the other day and that is my favorite James Newton Howard score. The music seems to identify the characters, the moods, the storyline so well and the love theme is one of the more beautiful pieces of music i've heard.

There's several scores of his I like. Wondering some of your favorites?

Here's mine:

Wyatt Earp
Unbreakable
King Kong
The Prince of Tides
The Fugitive
Outbreak
Batman Begins
The Dark Knight

I'm an avid score collector and enjoy Howard's music as well. Some of the ones I enjoy that you have not mentioned are...

Michael Clayton
Dreamcatcher
Collateral
Vertical Limit
A Perfect Murder
The Fugitive
Hildalgo

Howard composes some wonderful music.

I am not exactly sure of what the actual score is in a movie?? is it the main song u here the most, or it the sound effects in the movie or what?? Please explain and if I understand I can give some of the scores I like. thanks.

The main difference between soundtrack music and score is this.
A score is the original music composed for the film to back the action and what have you. Think of all the music for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc. A soundtrack is usually the music for a film that is not written for it. The rap music in How High, or the 50s music in American Grafitti.

This does not mean that something Bruce Springsteen wrote for Philadelphia is not score material. It was written for the film in mind but not really composed to fit in any particular place in the movie.

Queen's Flash Gordon soundtrack is a great example of the best of both worlds.

ok appreciate it, so let me ask u this......What is it called when its at a climaxx or a sudden part in the movie and u hear these strings or sounds like for example, if u ever watched that movie "Gridiron Gang" and when the Rock was driving and stopped to look at a team practicing football and the background music (no drums or beat but mostly strings etc...) what is that called? I like that type of stuff.

I like his soundtracks as well as his work with Elton John when he was a member of his band especially the :Rock Of The Westies" album which I have personally signed by EJ(with COA)!.

Gridiron Gang's score was composed by Trevor Rabin. The part you are talking about is something Rabin composed to translate the dramatic needs of the director. Someone with more musical knowledge may be able to label exactly what this piece of music is called, but it ultimately origiinates from the original score that Trevor Rabin composed for the movie.

I believe the track is called 'Sorry, Football is Over'. But that music is on the score. If you can find it. I haven't seen the film in a long time, so it is hard to remember exactly the music that is playing during that scene.

Trevor also composed the scores for
Con Air
Gone in 60 Seconds
Get Smart
Armageddon
Snakes on a Plane
Top Gear
National Treasure
Wolf
The Glimmer Man
Enemy of the State (with Harry Gregson-Williams)

Hans Zimmer was the composer for those movies. Howard was a musician.

howard and zimmer collaborated and are both billed as composers. sometimes they would work together on a theme/sequence, sometimes they would divide them up

You are right. I stand corrected.

Those two have the Zimmer feel to them though.

Ok thanks. Its hard to describe but it isnt a song playin or anything like that, its just a drmatic piece with just strings and high sounds while he is in deep thought lookin at practice. i think I heard that piece in another movie to. But again it isnt a song its more of just background audio to fit the scene with some instruments. I like it whatever it is lol
