If I'm going to do this, it looks like I'm going to needs a couple of tools. The guy on the vid practically took the whole thing apart, I thought like the Blu-ray laser replacement it would be somewhere near the blu-ray drive. The CPU is all the way on the bottom. I could probably do this myself to save me some money.
Where do you get a thermal compund from? |

Yup, that's what I found on Amazon: -
http://www.amazon.com/Arctic-Silver-...9930160&sr=8-1 I don't know if there is any real difference, they should work the same. |

Personally I use MX-2 because it's supposed to not have a curing time and it is non-conductive, so when you squish the heatsink on, if you some spill on the board it won't short out any of the nano-circuits. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186020 Last edited by Seeking_Alpha; 08-11-2009 at 01:28 AM. |

Contact Sony, fixing it yourself will do nothing besides temporarily restore it. Waste of time unless you NEED to get a backup, which IMO isn't even worth it since 80% of your stuff won't be restored. |

Oh, then yes. If reflowing your PS3 works, you shouldn't have to reformat your hard drive.

If it's out of warranty and the sticker is removed they don't give refurbs, they fix it if they can (or want to) otherwise they refund you. That's what the rep said to me at least, we all know how much some of them know though
![]() Also whoever said fixing it yourself is wasting time, when I fixed mine I got another 4 months of playing before it broke again. I fixed it again but decided to buy a new one anyways. Who knows how long it'll last this time but I hardly ever use it anymore. I suppose it's up to you, but now 4 months can possibly last you until the PS3 slim and/or price cut comes. That's huge, and you get time to back up your saves and stuff. I was only unable to back up 1 thing, my KZ2 save so I'm guessing 80% is a bit of an exaggeration. EDIT: The reflowing worked for me every time I did it (twice). First one lasted ~4 months before YLOD again, I did it a second time and it's still working. |

My PS3 is out of warranty, I've had it for two years and I think Sony only has a one year warranty. The sticker is still there, I haven't messed with it yet but if sending it to Sony means I lose my saves then I'd rather give it a shot myself.
