Hi Vilya hope you're feel great, that Poster asked if I'd be crying if a new 2K Master to make I guess a UHD 4K Disc of an Old Movie. That File to make the 4K Disc is put on a Server for Distribution, and the Streaming Providers have access to upgrade their Cust/Subs for a price. So if I pay the price I'll possess and own that File!

None of this is a certainty.

For instance, The Shop Around The Corner has been on BD for over four years, but is still at the moment only available to stream in SD.

After receiving an e-mail a few days ago telling me that my order of The Abyss would be arriving on April 4, I could hardly believe it when it dropped through my letterbox yesterday - and just in time for Easter.
I look forward to getting stuck into it.....and of course an Easter egg or two.

sometimes it can be a change of perception over the years. You brought up SW. One of the more controversial changes is: In the original Han Solo shoots first, back in the day's when western movies where still in everyone's mind being the fastest shot was a big deal and a quality. But today having the good guy pull the trigger first is not as as acceptable so changing the sequence and the bad guy misses is more socially acceptable.
Yes, that's fair enough and makes sense. Thank you for that.

I mentioned Star Wars as I recall quite a bit of controversy over the alterations for the DVD's. I remember watching the original trilogy on VHS back in the early 90's (they were even in widescreen) and I'm assuming these would have been unaltered. I didn't really take to Star Wars if I'm honest.....however Star Trek - now that I really love.

Great article, thanks for sharing. I especially liked these bits:

Quote:
The other irony is that consumers who ditched physical media as old-fashioned effectively downgraded, technologically. Movies on disc don’t get pixelated or need to buffer. Ryan Verrill, who runs a news resource called Disc-Connected, worries that people are so used to streaming that they don’t realize they’re being ripped off. Streamers “say, ‘Hey, you can stream 4K,’ but it’s not 4K,” he told me. “It’s compressed beyond belief and encoded way worse than even a [regular, non-4K] Blu-ray is. Consumers pay more for a ‘4K plan’ that isn’t 4K. It’s ridiculous.”
Quote:
The notion of “owning” films digitally has also soured. In 2018, longtime iTunes customers who thought they’d purchased films forever were shocked to notice that Apple sometimes deletes titles from users’ libraries for licensing reasons. Last month customers of Funimation, an anime streaming service that was acquired by Crunchyroll, learned that titles they’d bought from Funimation would be deleted.

Note, I made no comment about the A/V quality of Road House on Amazon, I just posted the numbers as displayed via Amazon diagnostics. You can do the same on your Shield if your very quick with a button sequence on your remote. You can see a limited Netflix diagnostics by F4 from a connected keyboard (USB or Bluetooth) or programmed FLIRC.

Streamers produce a file for a title, that file is segmented and my contain 6, 8 or more encodes. The lowest one may be 480p and a very low data rate and the highest one may be 2160p along with DV and the highest data rate that service uses.

We never know where the file may be served from, it could be from a server halfway across the country or it may be from caché server (edge) across town.

True Lies UHD Blu-ray is a . Just a few minutes in the wife, who rarely comments, said True Lies looks hazy and not as sharp as the tape (tape being D-VHS D-Theater). About 45 minutes in I stopped and put the Blu-ray in the Oppo 203 and it had the same look to it. Next I lowered the black level (Brightness) a couple of clicks and that helped a lot. So I did the same on the Zidoo 5000 and we finished the movie. Because the UHD Blu-ray is DV you can not make this video adjustment on the Oppo.

Some shots were very sharp and detailed while many were wax figures, it appeared they did DNR on a shot by shot basics. Color grade is not consistent either. A classic case of people who do not know video being in charge. Does anyone truly believe JC has any idea what these waveforms really means?

What you are seeing is the result of A.I upscaling, including the brighter backgrounds.

It’s more noticeable on TL because it wasn’t taken from a 4K source and the A.I has less to work with detail wise. Titanic and The Abyss fare much better.

I did not look into any of the tech stuff for any of these releases because I wanted to judge without bias. I will say my D-Theater tape of TL will not be on eBay anytime soon.

Very similar here in the UK. The two biggest supermarket chains, Tesco and Sainsbury's, have done the same - at least the ones near where I live. Only Asda still had a selection of the latest releases the last time I went in there.

There is however an HMV store in Chester and a Fopp store in Manchester (both about 20 miles away from me) which do stock a full range of DVD/Blu-rays including all the boutique labels. Whenever I'm passing by, I will always stop in these shops and I don't ever recall coming out of them empty-handed.

You can not possess a file that is located on someone else's remote server and you most certainly do not own that file. Even those of us that buy discs do not own the files contained therein; we simply own the disc that contains the files. Owning the disc, however, means that we possess the files and that we have control over them. The files on that disc can not be changed, for better or worse, nor can our access be revoked or infringed upon in any way.

With digital distribution and SVOD both, you possess nothing and you own nothing. You only have access for as long as it is granted to you.

Thanks for asking after how I feel.

How you access those files and how they are played are not the same nor is the quality the same.

Here are three digital images of the same thing:

It is obvious that while these are all digital images, they are NOT the same quality.

I am inclined to think that his repetition is just trolling in its simplest form. He repeats himself and we repeat the same futile replies. Maybe we're the ones that need help for continually against his impenetrable obstinance?
