I don't follow what your trying to ask. If you're looking for the audio mix that was used for the 70mm prints back in the day, I'm certain it's on one of the U.S. discs and (I think) the one you were just asking about. BUT, that mix is only in Dolby Digital (compressed audio) but still, it is the mix you're asking about.

The newer disc has better quality audio (uncompressed) but it's a different audio mix.

The "compressed" 5.1 70mm track was encoded at 640 kb/s. I honestly doubt anybody would be able to hear any difference between that 640 kb/s encode and if it had been encoded "lossless".

It's the placebo effect of the DTS-HD writing on the AV Receiver...

In a blind test nobody would be able to tell the difference

I ordered the Australian UHD. Very curious to hear this 70mm 5.1 original mix.

Even with my rapidly diminishing hearing and TV speakers I'd still like to have had it preserved in lossless on the reauthored disc tho

Maybe we can hope for an eventual future uber set which would include the missing cuts in UHD plus Returns (but I wouldn't bet).

Yeah I wouldn't take that bet. Maybe we'll get the extended cut of STM from that brand new transfer that the caped wonder guy was talking about, but that's about it. If we're really lucky then they'll sneak out a UHD of Returns on the WAC label or something.

Yes this is probably the best we can hope.

I bought the Batman and Batman Returns 4K collector steelbook sets a few days ago. Maybe Supes I and II will get the same treatment some day with a more complete set of edits in UHD.

The less centered (perfectly balanced between the 2 matrixes channels) the dialog, the more it would bleed into the surrounds on playback, whether in theater or at home. I'm not sure it would even have the full desired effects of precision on-screen source location and smooth panning across the screen with Pro-Logic II applied. I don't know of any attempts to utilize directional on-screen dialog with Dolby Stereo SVA. I only know of it being used with audio formats having discreet channels for multiple behind-the-screen speakers.

With fully discreet channels the issue you bring up is valid. Front speaker to screen placement in home systems rarely matches theatrical placement. Usually the L&R speakers are placed wider than the screen, which then places some of the voices that should be near the sides of the screen off the side of the screen instead. With that being said, I far, far prefer to get the original audio than to have it modified for the perceived shortcomings of the average home system. I want the shortcomings to be in what I can change (my home system) rather than in what the studio would have to change by releasing a new disc.

I think "Superman" (in the Dolby 6-track) may have been among the last of the movies to have on-screen directional dialog. I'm sure it was simpler to create one 4-track master that could be used as a source for building both the Dolby 6-track and Dolby SVA. Earlier movies using directional dialog with Todd-AO, Cinemascope, etc. didn't have to worry about creating a soundtrack version compatible with matrix encoding and decoding. I'm actually very surprised that the producers went to this trouble with "Superman."
sounds great in/with five screen wide dialog positions is a super Dolby®Stereo with CP200 , first used for superman was CP100 few of them cheap on ebay , also had special adapter for the spilt-surrounds , when CP200 was made this was condensed down smaller that is one many special cards inside the processor unit

Look, WB removed the 70mm mix from the latest 4K disc, but at least it's not time compressed.

Heh, people love to say that technical nitpicking wasn't a thing before the internet, but it was. It really was.

The releases from 1985 say 144 minutes, but the VHS database gives the same runtime for version reviewed above.

I believe there was a 1983 VHS release, around the same time as this laserdisc:
