The movie was originally made in Japan so the lips will be synced more with the Japanese language rather than the english. Same happened with TL's rental of Resident Evil: Degeneration. Your either going to have to watch it in Japanese with English subtitles, or deal with it.

Well if you compare Resident Evil: Degeneration English lip syncing with FFVII: Advent Children English lip syncing you'll think that FFVII is a perfect dub because I didn't think it was that bad at all when I listened to FFVII both on dvd and Blu-ray. I mean sure FFVII English dub didn't fit the mouth movement a 100% but it was good enough to just say at least they tried.

But keep in mind that the English dub is a mixed bag. Wally Wingert wasn't at the top of his game as Rufus Shinra. Mena Suvari and Rachael Leigh Cook were dreadful as Aerith and Tifa respectively. Steve Burton was good but a touch off compared to other times he's voice Cloud. George Newbern is the real standout as Sephiroth. I actually found him far better in the role than Toshiyuki Morikawa. Everyone else was very good across the board.

I haven't noticed any problem with the dubbing of FFVII.

Never checked the US track, though. Don't care much for non-original language tracks.

That was the first CG movie I've seen where I was actually impressed hugely by the animation. The level of rendered irregular objects in it, as well as number of people was just phenomenal. The detail was impressive.

Really? I found it all passable but in no way jaw dropping.

I'm surprised you didn't like Wingert's Rufus. I thought that performance was spectacular and far better than the Japanese actor. Then again, I loved Mena Suvari's Aeris as well, which I know is contrary to popular opinion.

As to the original question, though, Advent Children is a foreign film, and foreign films generally deserve at least one watch-through in the original language.

On the other hand, it is easier to make a convincing dub of a cartoon like this film since the on screen performance wasn't ever actually given by the speaker. Nonetheless, you can't expect the lips to sync up any more than you would expect them to if you had a dub a live action film like Amélie or Pan's Labyrinth.

I just feel he's done better and he came across as if he were phoning it in. Mena Suvari sounded like someone recorded her first readthrough of the script and didn't bother to do any retakes.
