John Cameron Mitchell's SHORTBUS, Yorgos Lanthimos' DOGTOOTH, and Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi's THE TRIBE also come to mind as more "recent" ones.

I would watch Disney's Caligula in a heartbeat. I'm dead f...ing serious.

It's not that it offends my sensibilities. I can handle it. But I'm not going to pretend that the movie is anything other than what it is either.

This movie isn't porn and I don't pretend that it is.

And you need to see the debauchery depicted in all its perversity because you're that lacking in imagination?

That doesn't mean this way of doing it in this film was good. There's a difference between art and sleaze, and this movie is sleaze.

Police? No. Someone who dares to represent good and better taste? Sure. Why not? Someone should do it. So why not me?

“Caligula is sickening, utterly worthless, shameful trash. If it is not the worst film I have ever seen, that makes it all the more shameful: People with talent allowed themselves to participate in this travesty. Disgusted and unspeakably depressed, I walked out of the film after two hours of its 170-minute length … Caligula is not good art, it is not good cinema, and it is not good porn.”

If the man wasn't dead I would also suggest you take it up with him too while you're at it.

He was also probably a better representative of the good taste police besides.

What I don't understand is why you continue to view a thread (or even looked at it to begin with) about a film you don't like? Even if you just wanted to put your two cents worth into the discussion, you should have made one post and been done with it. Instead you feel the need to make new posts insulting the people that do enjoy it. Move on.

P.S. You've made Kyle post "Oh My God" twice now and that is not a good thing.

I've already answered that question pretty much, and it's not that I dislike the film. There are people out there that like "Waterworld," but will also acknowledge that it's not a great --or even good-- movie. 'Army of Darkness' is cheesy as hell, but falls into the "So Bad It's Good" category because of its charm. 'Caligula' is a part of my collection, but that doesn't mean I think it's great --or even a good-- film. I have bad movies that are a part of my movie collection as well. That doesn't mean I would laud them as great works of art, or that I should have to just to please people I don't even know.

Actually, no, that's not what's happened at all. I expressed criticism about the movie and was then attacked on multiple fronts, and have barely hit back in response to it all. That's what's occurred here.

I don't care if people here like the movie. They're free to to their hearts content. Just don't try to tell me that I have to love it in kind. I'm entitled to my own point of view and assessment of it, same as anyone else here, including the people that love it, and if someone asks for an opinion about whether or not they should watch something, or this cut versus that cut, I'm going to be honest if I decide to chime in on the matter. I'm not going to sugar coat it, and I'm not going to lie.

It's three times actually, if you include yesterday when I was hit with that response initially for referring to the movie, along with two other films, as smut. "Oh My God" for referring to 'Debbie Does Dallas,' 'Deep Throat' and 'Caligula' as smut. Perish the thought!

Well, all I can say to that is that I'm sorry that 'Behind the Green Door' wasn't mentioned there as well, since they all fall pretty much into the same category.

Have fun. I'll keep whatever other thoughts I may have about the movie to myself. I wouldn't want to offend anyone by saying whatever else I may happen to think about it.

Imagine thinking Army of Darkness is "so bad it's good."

Nobody cares that you dislike Caligula. A lot of people do. It's more your snooty "these films are beneath me and anybody who thinks they have artistic merit are kidding themselves" attitude which is grating.

Why would I even need to take it up with him? He's not here enforcing his viewpoint on others.

Also LMFAO at the suggestion that because Roger hated it, that's somehow an objective fact. Roger may have been a pretty major figure in film critique, but that doesn't mean we need to agree with everything he said. I disagree with so many of his opinions, which is fine.

No one here has a problem with you hating the movie. I hate plenty of movies. Let's pluck one out of the air, Cruising (1980). That left a horrible taste in my mouth, and no one really had a problem IIRC when I shared in a little more detail what I didn't like about it here. What I didn't do was look down on anyone who did like the movie. Just take a moment and consider this.

Am I bad person if I say I'd love to see the fallout if you watched Salo? Caligula is tame next to that.

The current popular crybully virtue signaling snobbery trend is getting so old. Can we go five minutes without it? Apparently not! Oh no I'm attacking and harassing again. I can't help myself!

The most worrying thing to me, is why someone who loathes this movie actually owns a copy?
