I just bought the 4K disc of True Lies today and immediately watched it to see what all the commotion was about.
It's certainly an adjustment watching the movie this clean.

Did it have problematic scenes ? Sure
Did some of the faces have a weird shiny look to them ? Yes
Was the tinkering necessary ? I don't think so.

Faces from further away were more problematic than the close-ups imo.

But this was far from the disaster I expected it to be. And definitely not unwatchable.
I'll just swap the BD in it with the Spanish BD and keep those two but honestly, I think I'll go with the 4K from now on.

I really wouldn't mind online movies if they came as downloads at full quality even if there was some type of DRM.

Thankfully I still find new things on disc and that's even better.

The relevant 4K thread made it sound like an interlaced non anamorphic video master from the DVD era, you and I know very different having both bought it.

Where are all the disc collectors then Anthony? Disc sales are falling off a cliff and digital sales flatlined.

Discs are increasing in price which is a big factor. If I weren't old with most of my big dollar items paid off (cars, house, kid moved out) I wouldn't be able to buy all the titles I currently do. My wife and I went to Jack in the Box today for the first time in about 4 years. We had a couple of coupons which dropped the price to $28 but it would have been $40 without them. I couldn't believe that the prices basically doubled in just 4 years time. I feel bad for the younger generations. The average rent for a house my size is about double what my mortgage was.

Exactly, when I was following that thread with almost 5.500 !!! replies, I thought I had to be ready for some atrocity that I would turn off after 10 minutes.
Thankfully, that was not the case. It does have issues though.
But the more problematic scenes are few and far between. Some scenes even looked great.
Have yet to see The Abyss but if True Lies is the worst of the Cameron bunch then I'm not too worried.

Yes, but disc prices are increasing for a good reason, we all know what that is.

I just don’t see another ownership market in the future when people are becoming accustomed to streaming buffets. The value proposition isn’t there for average Joe. Heck, young people don’t even own their own homes generally these days.

My main point was that life in general is currently so expensive that the average (especially younger) person can't afford to spend money on discs.

But they can afford several streaming subscriptions.

Streaming is a lot cheaper. I only pay for Netflix and Prime but the monthly cost is less than one UHD. I spend about 25X more on physical media each month.

I don't know how people use NF, I just posted it here because if someone uses their laptop with DL movies to watch later they might want to avoid (if possible) "upgrading" their NF app.

1) a lot of people are looking at sales numbers from back in the day at the height of DVD and assume the numbers are c0omparable. They are not those numbers also included a lot of copies sold to rental places. Something that has actually collapsed, and is still collapsing

2) I pointed out before, there are people that bought films back in the day because you could often find them in the bins for almost the cost of a rental and you never had to bother going to get the rental and then bring it back. So for people that are not collectors and are just looking for an easy time waste getting the most out of that subscription streaming makes sense and it does mean there is no longer the need to go out nd buy those cheapies as backups.

3) the question is not if they are "falling off a cliff" or "flatline" but will it go down to 0. I think it will continue to go down a bit, but at some point that will stop. Don't get me wrong it is probably not good for studios that the market will shrink. But that just means they will need to work harder (make sure there are enough films coming out to get Anthony's, Steed's.... money to make back some of the loss from Tom, Dick and Harry that occasionally bought when it was a good deal.

yeah, movie deals on physical media are not as often or as good and prices have gone up a bit but no where near what everything else has seen as inflation. Unfortunately there is only one pocket.

glad you had fun. I have not been to Boston in Many years. My dad used to have a buddy down there so as a kid we would viste them every 2-3 years. It is a nice place.

yup that is the nice thing about physical media once bought you can keep on watching them, no need to spend again next month, next year or next decade on it again
